The walks won't get the job done but they're better than outs.  If he tries to go on a tear, he's just going to make outs because he'll be swinging at bad pitches, until the rest of the lineup heats up and Span is back.  Let him continue his plate discipline, because we don't want him to lose that and it will be useful when he once again get's support from the rest of the lineup.  And if that doesn't happen, well, we're not going to the playoffs no matter what Harper does.

Right.  He's at his best when he takes the walks that are offered.  He's scored quite a few runs this year after walking (mindfact) and it results in him seeing better pitches when the intent is not to walk him.  Think of Bonds at his best, he was an on-base machine in no small part because of his willingness to take a walk in almost any circumstance.

he bats 3rd tonight, the three hitters behind him have averages of .211, .203, and .217- swinging for the fences is probably the best way for him score tonight

That, to me, makes it clear that Bryce is going to have to do the run-producing tonight and perhaps the next 10 days or so, until those guys get their timing back...Bryce has to stay in the three-hole until Span is back, then we should have Span/Escobar/Rendon/Harper. Alternatively, stick Rendon behind Harper so the boy can get a damn pitch to hit once in a while.

Why not try this instead.  Bat him fourth, Zimmerman third. That would at least give Zimmerman a better chance to see good pitches.  It also increases the possibility of Harper coming up with runners on - even maybe the bases loaded - which in turn increases the chances of him getting good pitches.

Of all the returning players I think Zimm is seeing it best and Rendon is close behind. I'm not worried about them. It's Werth that looks way out of sorts.

Zimm has been tagging the ball. Just a matter of time. Werth and Desmond... probably never.

Harper has said that he prefers to bat cleanup.

That suggestion along with Espinosa batting 6th.

Would be fascinating play by play, though. Compelling monotone.

Then Werth third.  I suggested Zimmerman, because I feel that he has always benefited by hitting in front of a power lefty.  Like when he hit in front of Dunn.  On occasion they tried Dunn/Zimmerman 3/4, and it wasn't as successful.

He hasn't had an at bat in more than a week. Ice cold by now, probably. I'm hoping Rizzo is just playing it out for x number of days with Desmond, then putting in Espi. I'm also hoping that x<10.

That suggestion along with Espinosa batting 6th.

All the walks are no longer enough. The singles, no good. I think if this team is going to make it to October they need Bryce to go on another tear.

I feel like he never goes on tears

Rocket scientry wouldn't be a bad second career.

Harper scratched from the lineup tonight. Varner curse is real.
