I loved Ryan Church as well. Always seemed like people focused too much on what he couldn't do instead of focusing on what he could do.

We always had much bigger problems, so I never understood why any of the focus was on him.

In a classic early Nats move, they sent him to the minors at the beginning of the 2006 season after a rookie season where he put up a 118 OPS+ for Brandon Watson, who ended up having a .385 ops in 9 games, because Watson "won the job in spring training".

It was a dark time.

In fairness, like twenty teams passed on Trout. And Storen has been a pretty damn good Closer(at least in the regular season).

Also, wasn't Trout awful last October?

I think 29 teams passed on Trout...wasn't he a 2nd round pick?

Ryan Church was before my time here. Did people not like him? I always thought he was a solid player.
He was a Holy Roller, an idiot, and he couldn't lay off the slider in the dirt.  Other than that, a solid player.

Wikipediaed him to jog my memory.

Quote
On May 20, 2008, Church suffered a minor concussion while sliding into Atlanta Braves shortstop Yunel Escobar. It appeared as though when Church initially slid, his head made contact with Escobar's right knee. After Church struck his head, he slid about eight feet past second base with his forehead dragging on the dirt.

Concussions can cause brain injury.  Fortunately for Church there wasn't much brain to injure.

As the rest of the team struggles, Harper's WAR continues to rise (likely due to the % runs created for the team, since RAA is used for fWAR).  Defense has been better lately, too.

Don't like that Harps keep chirping about umpires and strike zones after the game. Just shut up and play. You think the ump will give him any benefit of the doubt tonight?

He was an extremely hard luck 1-5 tonight.  Could have just as easily been 4-5
