Another view: this is a tough lineup for any opposing pitcher. Oh, and it's got five guys on the bench who can hit...four are young guys who could start with most teams. Quickly running through teams I followed: as strong as the '77 and '78 Yankees; better than the '86 Mets; close to the late-90s Yankees and maybe better.

On a seperate note.... I wore my Bryce Harper jersey to Tempe today to watch the Angles and White sox spring training game and everyone was getting extremely defensive about my choice in attire. They seemed to think by wearing it I was somehow saying Trout was a lesser player. Up tight about the east coast bias I assume!

With Span leading off, this is the only sensible lineup. The only reason Harper bats third is that Span, batting lefthanded, is leading off. Except for plus defense and speed.

I don't care what Span hits, as long as he's healthy he'll bat leadoff and play CF. That's the way it should be/will be.

tom, stop trolling, you should know I'm one of the biggest proponents of OBP and advanced stats on this site. So save the

Span will leadoff because he's going to have a high OBP. Anyone basing your opinions on him off of ST should look at his career numbers before proclaiming Werth should be leading off.

Span also sees a lot of pitches. His OBP may not be the highest on the team, but the combination of good OBP, seeing lots of pitches, and good speed makes him a good bet to be a solid leadoff hitter. I think a bigger question mark for him will be his health - he's had more than his share of health issues the past few years.

There's also no shame in taking a guy with a low average, lots of speed and high walk rate and hitting him ninth so he can see a lot of pitches and turns over the lineup better than a pitcher can.

Hey look, you described Span and Werth. I still contend Werth's a better leadoff hitter, but if Span doesn't bat first his best place is batting dead last, like Minty says, so leadoff it is. Besides, no harm in having TWO really patient, high OBP guys in front of Harper.

There's a small chance Span plays himself out of the position, but it's less than ideal to have Werth lead off. Your two options at that point are wasting Werth's power a couple times a game because he's coming up after the pitcher, or getting all La Russa about it and batting the pitcher 8th and Span 9th, which forces Desmond/Espinosa/Ramos into the 5/6/7 slots - again, not ideal.

Batting Span 8th isn't even an option in an NL lineup....you may as well not have gotten him if you're going to waste his best attribute at the plate (getting on base) by batting him in front of the pitcher a couple times.

Batting order has been studied to death academically, and I think optimal batting order results in 1 additional win than the typical batting order.

So it doesn't really matter, unless we want to talk about Zimmerman/Harper/Werth/LaRoche/Desmond/Span/Espinosa/Ramos/P.

That's probably optimal.

In case anyone doesn't know, the reason it would be optimal is that you're giving extra plate appearances to the best hitters. Last year, here were the Nats plate appearances by batting position:

1: 762
2: 741
3: 725
4: 712
5: 697
6: 673
7: 655
8: 639
9: 617

So if we think Ryan Zimmerman is our best hitter, he's going to get 7% fewer plate appearances this year batting 4th than leading off. We lose slightly more runs from those lost plate appearances than we gain by having more "speed" higher in the lineup.

Oh, I agree that spring training numbers are pretty werthless with exception perhaps of pitch velocity. Otherwise injuries are about the only thing that matters in the spring.

As they said in Major League 2 when Willy Mays Hayes is hitting all those HR's in ST, who cares... That guy (pitcher) will be bagging groceries in two weeks.
