What manager would put a 40hr hitter in the lead off position?

Meh, "And after 5 pitches, the Nats lead 2-0 on a Bryce Harper two run home run" sounds better :D

I think the two spot makes a lot of sense for him right now.

Given that we have Span, a lefty who is a leadoff hitter, I don't like Harper batting 2d as much as Werth.  My preference would be Harper 3d, RZ 4th, ALR 5th, Desi 6th, Danny 7th, and C 8th.  It is left-right all the way through 6th, then switch / right.  Very balanced and not force, without any guy out of a slot he can't handle.  You could get fancier against a tough lefty, but as long as Span can handle lefties well, there is no need to move guys.

I like:
Span
Harper
RZ
ALR
Werth
Desi
Espy
C
P

Less pressure on Harper.

Hi, I'm the lefty specialist.  My manager asked me to tell you that it's really thoughtful of you to line up your 3 lefties in the 1, 2, and 4 positions.  It makes his decisions so much easier on his bullpen usage.  It let's me stay in for more than one out and maybe go an inning.  Thanks!

I'll take an average reliever who's only good enough to fill a niche role vs. those three.

I agree but I think Zim-with-1-N's contract requires that he always bat 3rd.

I see your point. I just don't think Harp is ready for the three hole. I think he would put too much pressure on himself. But he's surprised me before so...

What I might do is start ALR there and Bryce 5th in April, then switch the two if Bryce gets going really well and ALR slips.

Span has a career OBP of .374 against lefties, 25 points higher than against right handers.

Correct. The only better possible lineup is to flip Span and Werth, but I know most people couldn't handle that.

you mean a guy with a .395 SLG (based almost entirely on having enough speed to turn singles into doubles) anywhere else that leadoff or the bottom of the order- yep, I couldn't handle that.

Werth should bat 3 or 5-- preferably 5.

True, I think our optimized lineup actually has Span batting 8 or 9.
