Absolutely.  That was dirty pool, which I suppose is another term for the Schuylkill.

Ross not available because he pitched 2 days ago.  Cole would be on 3 day rest.  Looks like Taylor Hill.

Or Taylor Jordan...

For those asking about Joe Ross: He started Thu for Syracuse. Taylor Jordan scheduled to start tonight, wouldn't be surprised if scratched.

Frustrated Gio Gonzalez: "Big rain. This rain kind of caught us all off guard. We didn't know it was coming for like three days so..."

at Indianapolis.

BTW - Lehigh Valley cancelled their home game tonight already.  This is pure gamesmanship by the Phillies.

If the Nationals were 99% sure the rain would swoop in and delay this game, couldn't they have started Felipe Rivero or David Carpenter and saved Gio?

absolutely.  The only other thought is Roark could start tomorrow and they could bring up Solis or Grace for the bullpen.

Williams, asked about Roark starting: "It depends on where we're at and what we're doing. We'll see how Game 1 goes and adjust from there."

They probably want to wait to see how many innings they get from Strasburg in Game 1 before making a decision.

I like the way Williams thinks, or at least articulates his non-thoughts. If I had not seen Williams mis-use the bullpen so often, I'd guess that he learned the "Joe Gibbs Non-Answer Answer". As in:

Q: "Coach Gibbs, Buddy Ryan says you are a weak nothing and his Eagles will trample the Redskins in the playoff tomorrow."

A:  "Buddy [smacks football] Ryan...Buddy [smack] Ryan..."

Next day, Gibbs ran the ball at Reggie White and Jerome Brown about ten consecutive plays. Jacoby, Lachey, and the Hogs&Piglets hit them over and over. Stomped the Eagles defense. A great game to remember on a day without baseball.

But the Nats couldn't be that sure the umps would call it

People paid money for tickets and it wasn't raining at the start of the game (3:05pm)

Yes but it's the home park's responsibility to make sure it's reasonable to assume the game can be played. Thats why so much money is invested in weather forecasting.  It's really inexcusable to get less than three innings in and be unable to finish the game. Modern weather forcasting is pretty reliable within a twelve hour period.

Quite frankly, this smells like gamesmanship by the Phillies.

Lucky folks! First I get the big black screen "Game delayed". Now I get my choice of all those teams I don't care about. Maybe the Yes Network has a Yankeeography of Andy Carey or Tony Kubek?

The umpires could have called the game after the first pitch.

I hear ya Slate.  I haven't acquired an understanding of what makes the umps let the game go on and what makes the umps call a game.  There have been a few games this year that were not called that amazed me.

Player safety is what makes umps make the call. Prior to the game starting, the game is called by the home team management.

Walter Johnson had incredibly long arms. No wonder he generated so much speed on his fastball.
