Yes. That's what I've always thought, as well. Shirley Povich, who covered Johnson from 1924, described Johnson as having a whip-like motion. Hank Thomas, Walter's grandson and author of the great biography, says that Johnson also had and used a curve-ball. In Game 7, 1924, when Johnson pitched the last four inning (5 K's) on short rest, a couple of the strikeouts were on Johnson's curve. He didn't just over-power hitters...but the combination must have been tough!
