Balfour didn't pass because the Os had second thoughts.

They wouldn't even have a first thought about trading for LaRoach...

I hope Balfour goes through with a grievance.  That's shady by the O's.

He needs to change his name first.  Horrible name for a pitcher.

At least Orel is a better name than his brother's name, Verbel.

With Snyder signed, I believe he will be on the 25 so that the younger guys can play everyday.

If we don't do anything else, and say the rest is up to spring training competitions we are likely looking at
- T. Mo doing anything from, nothing at all to a straight platoon with Laroche - including late inning switches
- Danny backing up the other 3 infield spots
- Det is the 5th starter (yeah, I know there is a whole other thread about this)
- Ohlie, and either Roark or Cedeno in the pen, depending on if they want two lefties or not

While none of that is all that awfull, the one that bothers me the most is Danny. I had in the past been a big Danny guy, but not any longer. I'd prefer a guy that makes contact over the power, especially in that role.

The fact that they were looking at guys like Baker and Chavez tells me they are not against the idea of T. Mo using his last option this year as neither of those play middle infield, and adding them would have meant Moore was the odd man out.

I'd really like to see them sign both types - corner and middle infielders - allowing for Danny and Moore to both play everyday in the minors, but I don't think it will happen.

Side note -  thinking through this with Danny and Moore, made think once again about how many mid 20's guys are coming up on their crap or get off the pot point in their carreers.

I cannot think of a team less in need of spending $20 million+ on Tanaka than the Nationals.

You can never have too much pitching.

That's true.  The fifth starter gets just about as many starts as the first.   Although if we do sign Tanaka, it would probably not be advisable to pursue any more starting pitchers at that point.

Thinking about it all wrong. Signing Tanaka makes trading Detwiler or Zimmermann more likely. Trading them gets us closer to a legit first baseman.

I don;t think you get a good 1st baseman for Detwiler.  For Zimmermann a different story but the gaining team would need to know they could lock him up for a while.  Not sure who needs pitching and has surplus of 1st basemen?

Detwiler + other parts

Actually, I think Detwiler is far more useful out of the pen.

A one time fee that doesn't count against anything?  You could make the argument that there's not a team better suited to pay the $20 million.

I'd be so hyped if we got Tanaka. No one could freak with our rotation if we did.

Doesn't count against anything?  What does it not count against? If you're the Yankees who are pushing the salary penalty then that matters.  We aren't near that limit, so $20M is $20M whether it's salary or a posting fee.

I cannot think of a team less in need of spending $20 million+ on Tanaka than the Nationals.

NY Times reports that the Yankees are interested in Tanaka, but worried that he will be another Kei Igawa. See
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/12/26/sports/baseball/yankees-know-risks-of-splurging-on-japanese-aces.html?ref=sports&_r=0

NYT best guess is that Tanaka will draw a $100M multi-year salary; in addition, any MLB team must pay Tanaka's club $20M to negotiate with with him.

Sounds like a pitcher the Nats might have bid for in 2010, but seems unlikely now. I would use that money to re-sign JZimm, Desmond, and Ramos.
