If we don't have a elite bench catcher (is that even a thing?) we're punting the 2014 season. Seriously? You believe that? Is it something we should be looking for? Sure, it would be great to pick up a catcher that could start and do so admirably should Ramos go down, but the fact is, just about any catcher that's capable of being a productive starter is, wait for it... STARTING FOR SOMEONE!! If we can get some decent offensive producting from either 1b or 2b, getting solid contribution from your back up catcher is a bonus.

nonsense...just because it is a rare commodity does not make it a bonus...

if the farm can cough one up great, otherwise a decent free agent catcher is going to get a job starting, and it wouldn't be worth parting with anything for a backup catcher

But if you (ie Rizzo) continue to wait, you're left with Solano or what's left on the market after every other team has made their choices...the leftovers.  The best non-starting catcher available RIGHT NOW is much better than what's going to be left after the other teams have picked.

But you're going to sit there and say Rizzo is punting the freaking 2014 season because he hasn't signed a "quality" backup catcher after dealing for Fister? You can't be that asinine can you? I'd have thought getting a elite 1b was the new white whale? Or shipping off Espinosa? But no, it's getting a top quality backup catcher or it's a punt... Unfreakingbelievable the level of assclownery we see here. Unfreakingreal.

I'm serious, outside of actually winning the WS, is there any chance you wouldn't nag about something? Actually, I think we all know that's not true. You would complain that somehow Rizzo et al punted the 2015 season because someone put baby in the corner.

Except as I've mentioned before, Rizzo is incapable of assembling a complete roster.  First base is going to be terrible.  We know that now because LaRoche is terrible.  Espinosa will be the same disaster he was in 2013 (which I predicted would happen).  We know that now.  The backup catcher situation will be among the worst in baseball and he's going to play a lot because Ramos is going to miss much of the season. WE KNOW THIS NOW!

The holes in the 2014 roster AS CURRENTLY CONSTRUCTED are gaping and obvious, hence my query about Rizzo sitting on his ass.

If Ramos' bat is that important, he should be playing first

Ahh, PC is overreacting and it's December.  We need SF to call "game" and then the offseason is over, lol.

last time I checked, spring training was about 2 months away.  Rizzo isn't done yet.

I'm with PC. Going into the season with only the AAA catchers to back up Ramos is not a good thing.

It is almost inevitable that he will miss some time and probably a good bit. Need a quality player that can handle the defensive duties and be adequate with the bat. ~50 starts

If only he could...and if only Harper could play catcher without wearing his body down. And if only we could trade for Giancarlo Stanton.

i'd bet a dollar we either get torrealba or buck, though Buck is already being connected to the Twins.

Sources: #Brewers interested in Michael Young to play 1B. #Dodgers, #Rockies also in mix. #Nationals involved early, exploring others now.

UNless it's that 14 year old kid, I don't believe it will happen if it's being reported.

beane and rizzo must have a persistent chat room, or they play words with friends and the loser has to give someone up to the winner after each game.

It would be nice if Rizzo got off his ass.  If Solano is our backup catcher, 2014 is being punted.
