Tough crowd.  I don't see the Nats signing Zimmermann long term, and given many Rizzo moves, he likes who HE likes.  Rizzo drafted Scherzer.  Rizzo and the Lerners have very good relations with Scott Boras.  I don't see Scherzer as a one year wonder.  He might not be a Cy Young guy next year, but I see him as a foil for Gio.  Also he is jumping into the National League, and like Gio, he could continue to put up strong numbers.

Again, I'm only speculating so you can all put away your torches.  That is unless you think I weigh the same as a duck...

Kilgore tweets the Nats really dig Boone Logan.

Only time will tell what Boone Logan is thinking, what he's watching, and where's he's going.

Quote
"Everybody's lists are different," Bowden continued, "we got to the point of Jordan Zimmermann and it was extremely interesting in how the process would go. I would leave, I'd go down to the clubhouse, I'd come back up and check and there seemed to be some controversy about Jordan Zimmermann's name. And this was a guy that Kris Klein, one of the crosscheckers (ed. note - "...and now the Nats' scouting director.") and Mike Rizzo really wanted. The rest of the room, which I respect equally, the rest of the room sat there and said, 'This is a real over-draft, if you leave him that high on the board it's going to be a huge over-draft, you can get him later in the draft.'"

Yep, as has been pointed out, Rizzo is the reason Jordan Zimmermann is a National. Dude was bullheaded on him and basically went crazy until everyone agreed to take him high.

Just saw on reddit a tweet about serious interest in Samardzija.  Not sure if this has been a rumor for a while, I skipped the last few pages of this thread.  Thoughts?

Word on Twitter is the Rays want Rendon, Giolito and Cole for Price.  We should just throw in Harper and Ramos as a sweetener.

A realistic scenario.

If I could extend him I'd make that trade. Best pitcher in the AL.

Why not trade a young hitter with immense potential with less than a year of service time for the right to pay out an enormous contract (unless you think price signs on the cheap) and go ahead and throw in a kid expected to be an ace and cole for the hell of it?

I mean, .300 with 15 home runs isn't "immense" potential and there's no such thing as a pitching prospect so yes, I'll take the known over the unknown. If you win, flags fly forever.

So price = flags (how many does he have by the way?)

the article says that we're committed to LaRoche and aren't considering dealing span.  Sounds like Rizzo doesn't want to fix our primary problem.

Get Price, don't give up Giolito and Cole, put Detwiler in the pen, and have a very good rotation.

He's won a pennant before. Honestly if that trade somehow guaranteed a WS berth I'd make that trade any day

I could see, to JCA's delight, a platoon between TMO and LaRoche at 1B this next season.  I don't think trading Span and signing Ellsbury, unless Ells comes in at 5 years and 20 Mil or less a season, makes a bunch of sense.  Ellsbury is great, but after the Crawford deal, I'd be reluctant to sign a guy with a game that revolves around his legs.

Come on, this is a different situation. Myers is a power hitter with a sterling minor league record who was traded for a 31 year old 2 starter. We're talking about trading an injury prone 2B with yes, admittedly a lot of promise and a prospect with 36 IP under his belt for one of the best players in baseball.
