they could agree to a window, but you can't force a player to sign

I'm just curious if Boras and Rizzo could come to terms before a trade was official and then finalize the extension after the trade was complete.

MLB would have to approve of it as well. The anti-tampering rule and all that crap.

they could (assuming no leaks), the thing is, if Scherzer is worth 'x' as a free agent, Boras isn't giving much of a discount on that number, so you end up trading away prospects and paying X for a pitcher- why not just make a run at Tanaka or a lesser guy like Garza?

Keeping Rendon and resigning Zimmermann is a better investment.

I don't see the Tigers moving him. This their shot since they've depleted their farm system to get to this point.

I'm not saying the would/should I was just curious about however can be done before a trade is final.

Why is Rendon's name even coming up? I wouldn't trade him straight up for Scherzer if that big nose fool came with a 10 year, $10 million contract

Yesterday morning - Rosenthal speculates that Sherzer could be a fit for the Nationals.

Yesterday afternoon - WNFF sends Rendon for his physical in Detroit.

Yesterday evening - WNFF sends MLB to investigate allegations of tampering in the pending Sherzer/Rendon deal due to the Nationals relationship with Scott Boras.

Boone Logan would be a good addition but somebody needs to break it to him that he needs to start putting his first and last name in the right order.

Would Nats fans prefer Price or Scherzer if the price (no pun) was the same?

It's just not as simple as that.  By price I assume you mean what we would have to give up in trade. But face it, there's no way we are giving up anything of value for Scherzer without first securing an extension. (That can be done. A Conditional trade with a window to sign him.)  So when considering "price" you have to consider not just how much in trade but how big a contract.

Let's just say we signed him to a one year extension.  (Hypothetical and highly unlikely, but it then provides a basis for comparison with Price.)   So the question is, two years of Scherzer or two years of Price.   I say Price.  I just don't see that Scherzer has established himself as an elite pitcher, based on one elite season.  Price has established himself as elite.

Anyway, I think 4years/60M is about right. If we could work that out, then you have to consider trading Rendon.  I don't think I would do it, I would try to convince them to take Espinosa.

By the way Tiger fans (on their message board) are drooling over Rendon, and say they would take him in an instant straight up. Which leads me to believe that he's too much to give up.

there is no way scherzer signs a 4 year 60 million deal coming off a Cy Young season.

Neither. Masahiro Tanaka will cost the same without giving up players or draft picks.

yea i agree. he is gonna require at least a Matt Caniesque contract, is gonna be 31 in the first year of it and didnt have his first truly elite season until age 29. the thigers recognize his value will never be higher and are trying to sell him for some serious talent. why are we so enamored with this guy? he is a shiny toy, and would prevent any Zimmermann deal. I would rather have JZimm long term than Scehrzer.
