The one in the 2008 series was when the game was already decided. However he has been clutch in the playoffs with the Phillies and the Nats. I thought he was done after last year but he has proven me wrong. The Phillies made a major mistake in not signing him. Their loss was the Nats gain.

Anyone want to venture a guess as to what happens to Werth at the end of this year?   He'll be 38 in May.  Does he retire or try and get an AL gig?

I was at a restaurant last night that he apparently frequents a lot and the bartender had nothing but nice things to say about him. And, yeah, I always though he was a jerk given his aloof approach at season ticket holder events.

Huge difference between when you're doing your job and when you're minding your own business. I know both kinds. Some are always on, some just happen to be good at something public but would rather not have to deal.

Yeah.  he and Harper seem to be pretty close so I wonder if extending him would help us keep Harper.

I have a friend who likes to say that Werth is the most important player in Nats history. Not sure I buy it but his theory is that no one took the organization seriously until it signed him.

I don't know if he's the most important but the acquisition of his was the most important. Yeah we overpaid but it was a sign that we were going to be a serious player from that point on. It was more than just an investment in one player, it was an investment to our future reputation in the league.

By fangraphs war, he's been worth $107MM so far.  There's a decent shot that, by WAR, he'll end up earning something like $115 - $120 MM over the life of the contract.   Nearly break-even, objectively.  You then argue about the intangibles - influence on Harper, clubhouse leadership, image among FAs, etc....

He was the most important until Harper.   I agree with Optics, the signing of Werth was the turning point in Nats history, and for the most part he's lived up to his end of the deal.  Harper's drafting and emergence has taken us to the next level.
