I only see BMT making the team out of ST if Werth isn't totally ready to go and a fill in flyer type OF is used.  The Nats could get a low ball deal on a guy like Schierholtz and just dump him when Werth returns.  Either way, BMT needs everyday at bats to lower the strikeouts.
Hmm... could Ryan Ludwick be a Nat? Or perhaps a Jonny Gomes reunion?

If you buy fWAR and the cost per win estimate, Werth has been worth about $62M (10.4 + 2.7 + 22.9 + 26.2= ) for his first 4 years under contract and been paid $63MM counting his bonuses (per Cots).  He's due $63MM over the balance of his contract.  Assuming he ages as 4 - 3.5 - 3 WAR (past 2 years he's been 4.6 and 4.8 ), that's 10.5 WAR.  The Nats would be paying $6MM a win for the next 3 years, when the going rate is already something like $7MM.

Of course, health is going to be a big factor on whether the aging is smooth, but barring a bigger collapse than the normal aging curve, the Werth contract may end up being a bit of an underpay rather than one of the worst deals in history.

The Nats don't need to make a trade unless Werth's return is delayed significantly.

We already paid McLouth and Moore is a proven decent bat with consistent playing time. We'd have to give up a solid amount to get a player who is a safe bet to give better production and I doubt it is worth it.

If the Nats can get McLouth going that would be big. More versatile than Moore.

Moore's bat plays in left if he's hitting over .250.  McLouth's glove plays in left if he's hitting over .220.  I guess the two of them could duke it out, but I wouldn't mind seeing Taylor get some coffee if Werth is delayed.

The projection for Werth being back is the day after opening day, but he's gonna end up rehabbing in AAA for a week or two.

Rizzo on the plan:

Quote
"Every team needs to have depth because injuries happen," he said. "As players age they get injured more often and it takes them longer to get back on the field. We recognize that. We feel that we have a situation in left field that we can put a platoon system of Nate McLouth and Tyler Moore or an everyday situation of Michael Taylor in left field that really can strengthen our defense with Michael in there and with Nate in there and a right-handed bat in Tyler Moore. So we do have some options, obviously, none of them are Jayson Werth out there, but like we've seen on other teams and with ourselves last year, guys have to step up and play better."

Good to hear.  Moore and McLouth would get a platoon, but Taylor would be every day.  Sounds like Taylor has to earn it, and would be guaranteed the reps if he does.

Taylor's got options and Moore doesn't.  Moore can also back up Zim at 1st.  So unless Moore totally falls apart at Spring training or is traded, he's probably on the Opening day roster and Taylor starts in 'Cuse.

if werth opens the season on the DL, you can carry both

I just question whether or not we want Moore to be a platoon player when he has struggled mightly in the past as a pinch hitter and non-regular starter.

Oh, Werth pled guilty and got a plea deal. 5 days jail. He will serve them on weekends so as to not interfere with his rehab.

I don't question it. WE DON'T.  Moore has no place on this team and the sooner we trade him, the sooner we can quit wasting time trying to figure out a role for  him.

Generally no, as those people are usually off on the weekends too. Even with rehab, rest is important.

Problem is that he is of no value. He has to be placed on an MLB roster and he has to start. So which team is going to basically take a one year flyer on a guy and is in need of a first baseman?

If I'm the Nats, I'm not real comfortable with him in jail with a bum shoulder.

Why not?  The list is legend of far less hot players who we've wasted roster spots on.

Wrong thread but:

Moore
Espinosa
Frandsen
Lobaton
McLouth

That's the same bench we had last year on opening day, except Hairston, the guy who was supposed to be a pinch-hitting expert, is replaced by Moore, a comparable bat with the added ability to play 1st.

I predict Carp gets his spot and they try to trade him in ST for a random depth arm or 7th string catcher or something.
