So he makes a sensible decision (as opposed to buying a TVR or Lamborghini) and he still gets jumped on? Kid can't win

Except sensible would be to have that and not this ridiculously douchebagged up truck also

Plus the new Merc he got with his initials embroidered in the interior.

I wonder if he manages to blow through the signing bonus and initial payments in time to be desperate for an extension?

I was just thinking the same thing :D :D :D

But honestly, aren't his parents rather well off? I don't forsee money being an issue

quick google search suggests they aren't rich

Quote
Ron Harper, their father, is a steelworker who laid rebar on many of the hotels and casino's along the Strip. He worked his boys tirelessly on hitting and throwing. He took them to clinics in California, tournaments wherever, cages across the valley, and the back yard to hit bottle caps and red beans.

I just don't understand the mentality of blowing money like that (granted I don't have that kind of money), but a custom merc, custom truck, acura... You'd think remaining rich no matter what happens would be in the back of his mind somewhere

you can pick it up in germany with the limiter turned off, then return it at a port where the limiter is turned back on, other than that they're limited (unless you get someone to reprogram it)

I don't know if any of you have ever watched those "lotto" shows, but I think one adviser stressed that you should take "x" amount of money to just blow on dumb crap while investing as much of the rest as possible. That initial mad money is supposed to help prevent the newly rich from going broke as fast as they get it. I'm not suggesting that's what he's doing, but it's a possibility.

I was just thinking about that this year, how professional athletes end up broke.  And I'm not talking about the ones who make the league minimums for a few years and then are out of their leagues.  I'm talking about the stars, the ones who make multiple tens of millions of dollars over the course of their careers.  I don't get it.

Honestly, I think, once I got my millions, I'd become more miserly, for fear of being broke again!

I'm baffled by this. If you gave me a million dollars, tax free, I'd be set for life.

I could either buy a house outright or live off the interest.

Money just enhances what you already were. If you were thrifty before you came into money, you'll stay thrifty. If you blew your money on useless crap before becoming rich, you'll just blow your money on expensive useless crap.

I doubt it's that simple. I imagine that among athletes and celebs, there is a culture of spending. People are influenced by what they see others doing, particularly friends and role models.

Plus, a lot of these guys start getting paychecks in their teens, before they've ever had to learn how to live independently on a budget.

Then I'm the happy medium. I certainly have blown money on fun stuff, but I also saved it.

I'm just surprised no one gets in their head and tells them this may be your only big pay day- you could have a career ending injury two years from now, and you've got a year of community college under your belt. Each million you spend, you could be drawing around $50,000 from for the rest of your life in a relatively safe investment

No one is going to tell a professional athelete that they may fail.

I don't think anyone is going to tell them that (besides their parents, who I'd hope would say something), and either way most athletes wouldn't listen.

it seems like something the union or their agent might want to talk to them about

Ideally, yes. And I'm sure most do, if not all agents (Octagon, for example, has an entire financial services division that clients can use to have manage their money - from day-to-day spending to investments for retirement. It's a great service). But again, it's up to the athlete to listen to them.

As others have said, no athlete is going to listen to a "you may fail/get hurt" sermon. And really, why should they? Part of the reason they are who they are is because of that supreme confidence in self.

If that is shaken they're already good as done.

because most will fail (look at the numbers of guys drafted who end up eventually even getting a couple of million in arbitration compared to those who don't) and of those who do succeed, a huge portion end up broke
