There's a difference in 'save your money' and 'you're likely going to fail'.

I agree, but back to bryce, hopefully he goes on a car and house buying spree and is desperate for the kind of cash infusion resigning will represent in the next few year ;) actually I hope he's smart

it seems like something the union or their agent might want to talk to them about

Players won't listen.

You know how many times my battalion was told not to drink and drive or get in to fights out in town? Yea ...

Given power/patience/arm, I'd say so. RT @Sky_Kalkman: @keithlaw If Derek Norris hits .250 in the majors, he's a perennial All-Star, right

Bryce Harper @BHarper3407

@keithlaw @sky_kalkman I'd have to agree!

Law has always been a big fan of Norris.

@keithlaw

No doubt on that. He's a catcher. RT @NotRizzo: Does that assume Norris can stick at CA. Not as impressive at 1B... @keithlaw @sky_kalkman

Harper should be making friends in DC after this Tweet (after he was asked "Nats or Yankees?"):

BHarper3407 Bryce Harper
@
@NatsHR2Win Nats for life! Who seriously wouldn't want to play in the Nations Capital! It's where everything happens! #getlikeus
9 Feb

I think he's serious about this.  Dave Sheinin wrote in an extensive article about Harper more than a year ago in which his father is quoted as saying he'll be a lifelong Nat, and they're a very close-knit family.

You can also find reference to the Tweet here:

LOL, not buying it. Clearly Boras talked with him and did some damage control.

If he wants to be a lifelong Nat, then he'll sign an extension in like 2015.

I find it funny people are always whining about things he says on his twitter when some athletes have no venue for people to communicate with them. Be thankful he even allows fans to talk to him.

Either Boras or Rizzo. If you follow Harper on Twitter, though, he's deep into it. He's treating his Twitter followers really well now.

That brings up a question: If he signed an extension now, that would make it OK for the Nats to bring him north in April?

yes, the whole point of keeping him down is service time, an extension mitigates that- too bad rizzo doesn't have the balls to do what the rays did to longoria

Well obviously, it's not a done deal that he retires a Nat.  But it's probably at least as likely as the possibility that he signs with the Yankees as soon as he can.  I find it interesting that it's the Harper Haters on this board who are the same people who assert that because Harper grew up liking the Yankees, he is automatically going to sign with them.  I don't get the Harper haters.  Is he cocky?  Sure.  Young/a little immature?  Yes.  But is there any real evidence he is a selfish, self-centered, egomaniac or anything close to that, either as a teammate or as a person?  No, and there's plenty of evidence to the contrary.

Well ... yeah, if he did it now. But there is no way in hell Boras would let him. He'd simply be leaving way too much money on the table.

the problem is the Red Sox, cubs, Angels, rangers, Dodgers are all also equally likely

And he always has. It was very nice of Bryce to communicate with fans in the first place.

So wait ... Bryce Harper is immature because he roots for non-DC area teams? Is that the point of Jason Reid's column? Really? #pass

He is only making things harder for himself and the Nationals, “and we’re not glossing over it,” General Manager Mike Rizzo said Monday. “We’re not just saying that he’s a 19-year-old kid and that he’s making typical 19-year-old mistakes. He’s a different case. He’s a special-case scenario. This guy is in the public eye. … When this guy Tweets it out, or says something, it can go viral. There’s a difference here. We recognize it.”

Rizzo has counseled Harper. They speak often about Harper’s responsibility to the organization. Washington’s public relations staff helps Rizzo reinforce the message in conversations with Harper.

Rizzo didn’t apologize for Harper being a fan of teams in other cities. Harper likes winners.

“He’s a Yankee fan, he’s a Cowboys fan, he’s a Laker fan. What do those three teams have in common? They win all the time,” Rizzo said. “They’re nationally recognized symbols and nationally recognized brands. That’s what this kid ultimately wants. He wants to play in the big leagues. He wants to win in the big leagues and he wants to win as a Washington National.”

I like the course Rizzo has taken. I think this is where his relationship with Boras will pan out. I'm also hoping that behind the scenes, guys like Werth and Zimmerman are calling him up and talking with him.
