No chatter for a few days.  I'm really starting to believe the market on Fielder is very very dry and the Nats are the only team that have put out a serious bid.  I don't think he goes to the M's and I think Boras is honestly waiting, and wasting his time, on Texas.  My belief is that Fielder wants to play here, the offer on the table isn't to Boras's liking, and this may shake out like Holliday and he comes here for less time and money than originally wanted.  Can't Darvish just sign already so the last hurdle is out of the way?

Just waiting on the Rangers to finish with Darvish ...

Someone explain how the whole Darvish thing works for me. The Rangers bidded what, 50 some million. Do they have to pay that, whether they sign him or not? Or does that go towards his contract? Just the rights to him? Bit confused.

I don't see what he has to lose by waiting on Texas.  It isn't like the Nats are going to reduce their offer if Darvish signs.

If they sign him to a contract, the $50m goes to the team that posted him.  If they fail to sign him, they get the money back.

Oh okay, so if they sign, 50 is automatically gone. Yeah you would think that'd put them out of the Prince running or at least help kill a lot of it.

I think Darvish is a free agent next season.  So he may wait at which point some team may pay him $100m directly instead of $50m to him and $50m to the posting club.

Hence my theory that they're not going to sign him. Looks like he wants $75M. If they weren't getting the 50M back, the decision would be whether he's worth 75M.   But since they get the money back the decision is whether he is worth $125M, which seems a huge price for someone who has yet to prove he can pitch in the  majors.

Can you imagine the backlash they will face if they fail to sign him though? That would make the Aaron Crow fiasco look like nothing.

The TV deal doesn't kick in until after the 2014 season IIRC so they'd still have 3 years without that extra cash.  Not sure if that would make a difference to them or not.

But who would the backlash come from?  Who would be angry?  I can't think of any entity except the ham bones, who stand to lose the 50M, and who cares about them?

Darvish, I believe, has two  more seasons before he is a free agent.  I believe all reports are pointing to the two sides working out a deal, as Darvish believes that he has hit a ceiling in the NPL and the challenge of the MLB is what is next for him.  He wants to play for Texas, and Texas obviously wants him.  A deal will be worked out, but probably will be less than what he is asking right now.

They shouldn't have bid so much if they didn't intend to offer him what they knew he wanted. If the money was the issue, they should have bid far less and gave him the difference directly. By putting out a bid larger than Dice-K's team got, the Rangers told their fan base and the baseball world that they want Darvish and are willing to pay whatever it takes to get him. I also can't find a link, but i remember hearing that Darvish was doing this out of respect and admiration for the Fighters, and is aware that 50 million dollars is a huge sum of money to them.

This would make the Rangers look incompetent (I don't care how many world series appearances they have). With that said, the Rangers will eventually lock him up, even if it requires persuading from Nipon Ham. Dice-K went down to the last few minutes, so this is nothing abnormal in these types of deals. Both sides are waiting to call each other's bluff, but the best interest of both parties is for Darvish to sign a deal with the Rangers.
