Don't discount the experience factor. That's one tough position and it's a lot to ask a kid to learn it at the MLB level. If they really want him to play CF they should have him play it in the minors for most of 2012. If they do bring him up in 2012, I just don't think he will have received enough reps at that spot.

It's really all moot. They are not going to sign Fielder, and they are going to play Harper in LF, move Morse to 1B and ditch LaRoche the first chance they get.

Wow .376 BABIP is insane for his time spent at 1B. Based on these numbers I don't know whether to fear a regression based on his stint at 1B or think he should have a better year than the end of last season since the end was super low.

They generally don't have 3 OF who are below average or at best average at their positions either.

Yes it does and it kinda makes Linty's point. All that put together it looks like Morse just got off to an awful start, settled in in May, and was the victim of bad luck on balls in play when he moved back to left field. Explains why the slugging percentage was still excellent despite average and OBP being way down.

I agree. Rizzo seems to value good defense. Especially up the middle - C, 2B, SS, and CF. Having a mashing LF and/or 1B who can't play defense very well probably isn't ideal for him but something he could live with.

Well clearly the rumors aren't completely unsubstantiated. Where there is smoke there is fire and there is plenty of smoke from credible sources. The question seems to be whether the Lerners and Boras can find a happy medium between their demands.

Maybe Morse just hits more line drives than everyone else if his BABIP is that high? If not, then I'd agree that he's probably due for a regression. If he does hit more line drives, then maybe it's sustainable.

Yeah, I don't disagree - Desmond boots the ball more than most other SSs. That doesn't mean Rizzo doesn't value defense, though - it just means you can't fix everything all at once.

that's why I looked at his career BABIP- I think he due to hit near his career mark, so the .254 seems like the outlier

Those are both pretty reliable baseball sources and considering how quiet Rizzo keeps the front office that's way more than we usually have in terms of sources. Hell, it's WAY more than we had about Jayson Werth.

That random blog said Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel was "hearing" from "sources" "around the MLB" that we are the favorites. MLBTR has the rundown.

What do we look like in 2013? Werth in left, Harper in right, Bourn/Crisp/someone in center, Morse...traded? I'm just concerned that signing Prince means we need to trade both LaRoche and Morse. We can't really be a playoff team if our defense is subpar at first, shortstop, and two outfield spots.

We all know how quickly the Hot Stove can heat up especially with a player of Fielder's caliber. That said, there is enough to be able to say that the two sides are having relatively serious discussions at a minimum.

I don't see how using the Nats as leverage gains anything for Scott Boras. At this point, the asking price in terms of years is too high for anyone to take a real run at Prince. Why try to drive the price up and lower interest even further? Rumors of the Nats talking to Fielder but NOT WANTING TO GIVE TOO MANY YEARS wouldn't exactly be helpful in what Boras is trying to accomplish.
