Seriously, the Phils are swimming in dough. They're easily one of the top 5 richest teams in baseball.

The benefits of selling out virtually every home game, lol

True - but when your payroll hits a certain level, as the Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs (lol) found out, you get hit with a tax. Ownership REALLY didnt want to pay it.

Frankly - I think losing the Giants series this week had a lot to do with this move.

Well hang on there. Harper was a Single A prospect until a couple weeks ago. It isn't "nothing"

Yes, the luxury tax. Yanks pay 40%.  Frankly, I think it should be set at around 120 million. But whatever.

The point is that they will pay off that luxury tax with hotdog sales from the first playoff home game

It's certainly FAR from a certainty.  This is one step above a draft pick.

They gave up the certainty of an already good major league player for this.

The tax ain't that much of a big deal.

Quote
A team that goes over the luxury tax cap for the first time in a five-year period pays a penalty of 22.5% of the amount they were over the cap, second-time violators pay a 30% penalty, and teams that exceed the limit three or more times pay a 40% penalty. The cap limit for 2010 is $170 million, and the cap for 2011 is $178 million.[9]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salary_cap#Luxury_tax_in_Major_League_Baseball

I don't think the Phils have exceeded it at all previously, so they would only have to pay 22.5% of the excess amount, nothing too difficult.

That could have been said 2-3 years ago as well. Prospects come and go. The whole point of getting better is to win the World Series.

If we have 2 more rings, then I could care less if we have to re-build in 5-7 years.

Was this a joke?  So much can happen in 5-7 years.  And the next couple of years they should be fine.  If they make a shrewd trade or two, and have a couple of good drafts, they should be fine.

True, but its their own fault. I have no idea why clubs wait so long to deal.

Two days ago the Blue Jays got Rasmus for their number 2 prospect and a bunch of back up players and relievers. The Mets got Zack Wheeler.

The Astros got two Single A players

Wow. Astros got tooled by the Phillies again. smh.

Why the freak can't we offer anything better for a player like that? Why can't we at least make some moves. Dammit!

This.

I understand not getting Pence. I mean, where would we play him? But we should have Bourn. If they took that for Pence, then Milone and a couple other minor leaguers should be enough.

The Astros also sent the Phillies $1 million in cash :lmao:

Between this and the Oswalt trade Wade is basically a Phillies' employee.

Pence is making 7 million this year and that number is only going to grow in the upcoming seasons. He doesn't fit our budget.

Exactly. I mean, I wouldn't have cared for the situation if we did get Pence but its just pathetic that such a trade went down. It's like a situation where you see something on sale and you think you should get it since its that cheap and once it goes back up in price you kick yourself for not budging. I would've jumped all over that.

We paid our RF 126 million. Is it going to grow that big? No, I thought so.

Yeah, the more I think about this, I just can't believe that there wasn't a better offer from any team for Hunter Pence. Weird.

PatsNats28 pointed out that he's 23rd in baseball in WAR - I'd say he's pretty good.  Plus, I htink he only gets better in that Philly lineup.

23rd for outfielders, not 23rd overall.
