Oswalt is not long for baseball.

Stras, Zimm, 1 more elite pitcher, is that as good as Halliday, Hamels, Lee - the answer is yes, especially at the Nats pitchers will improve with age and the Phils pitchers will decline.

They need to go out and get C. J. Wilson this offseason. Can you imagine Stas, JZ, and Wilson in a rotation? No, not as good as the Phils, Braves, or Giants..but pretty damn good.

Peter Bourjos is one of five outfielders -- Denard Span, Colby Rasmus, B.J. Upton and Michael Bourn -- the #Nats are scouting these days.

Peter Bourjos has tons of potential, but this year he has struck out a lot and hasn't walked as much.  but agreed he could be a star.

keep laughing minty/kevrock.

there's a reason the yankees/phillies/red sox are always in the postseason or at least in contention.

LAC!

The Phillies don't have the spending track record that the other two teams do. I'm not saying that they can't continue to spend like they have been, but so far they have done what you have described (built a core and then add superstars while spending) exactly once. To say they "do it all the time" is absurd.

Getting that core of homegrown players like they did this time around is not easy. Every team in MLB is trying to do what they did. There's absolutely no guarantee that the next group of talent they are lining up (I believe it's all in A ball) will amount to anything.

Further, their real genius came from trades (Oswalt, Halladay) and then lucking into Lee giving them a discount than going out like the Yankees and taking on retarded contracts.

Yes to this. I'm really high on Span. We could do without Upton. I could go for Bourne or Rasmus, but I don't think I want to see the Nats pay the price that they'll have to pay to get those guys.

I get the sense that the Phillies are in the process of taking advantage of a window of opportunity and when that window shuts they'll go back to mediocrity or worse.

The Yankees and the Red Sox are special cases and to compare the Nats (or any other team for that matter) to them would be a different argument to make.  The economic state of MLB favors those two teams (when you combine their long histories and gigantic fan bases).  No other team in baseball comes close - I'd say the Dodgers or Cardinals are the next closest and to quote The Chief:  It isn't even close.

If the Nats EVER reach the level of the Yanks/Sox it won't be in our lifetime.

Rosenthal tweeted that Phillies are the most aggressive on Pence (whoa), Red Sox have inquired but not a great match (sorry JCA) and the Braves aren't involved.

That also tells me that we don't have what it takes to get him.   :(

Bourjos does not have star potential.
Below avg pop, strikes out quite a bit, doesn't walk much.

Great speed and can play defense. He's young and will get better, but not to star level. Just don't see the skills for that. And I've probably seen half of the games he's played, living 10 minutes from the Stadium.

Whatever it'd cost us to get would be too much, since he's not much of an upgrade over Bernadina.

Bourjos outlook from CBS Sports:

Quote
You know you have to be a pretty special player to unseat a Gold Glover like Torii Hunter. Looking to make some changes defensively in the outfield last season, the Angels made the bold move of bringing up prospect Peter Bourjos in August, ultimately shifting the veteran Hunter from center field to right field. That's the same configuration Los Angeles will have heading into 2011, ready to unleash Bourjos on the rest of the league. Fantasy owners should not write off Bourjos after he hit just .204 in his first 51 games last season. Just look at some of the other numbers he put up in a short period. He had six doubles, four triples, six homers and 10 stolen bases. This kid has the ability to fill a box score. Again, look at his Triple-A numbers from 2010 -- .314 average, 13 doubles, 12 triples, 13 homers, 53 RBI and 27 stolen bases in 102 games. His Fantasy potential is that of a poor man's Carl Crawford. Still, Bourjos heads into 2011 as more of an AL-only Fantasy option and late-round sleeper in deeper mixed leagues, particularly Rotisserie formats. (Updated 1/21/11)

i'm guessing he would take a lot to get, minimum of Clippard or Storen.

If we can land Pence and we don't have to give up Stras, Harper, Espinosa, Storen or either Zimmerman(n) I will strip down and do a naked lap around my block.  And I'll somehow get proof of having done so while not getting any pictures on the interwebz.
