Espinosa and Ramos have the day off, Zimmerman's on the DL... oh do you mean Strasburg? I was thinking the tweet was about position players.

Not sure what he was thinking. Should have just watched it.

It was a hit and run.

Great work Pudge. Clippard is a monster. Sean is also a beast. Let's take this series.

He looked pretty safe on the replay. But Pudge did get the ball there. Competition is good for Pudge.

If you say so. I don't know how you tell.

Because it was a hit and run situation, Werth is pretty good at the hit and run, and he swung on an off-speed pitch. On a straight steal the runner gets a good jump and a seasoned hitter wouldn't swing on a slow, loopy curveball, because Ankiel would have had the base stolen. On a hit and run there is not an emphasis on getting a good jump (you focus on not getting picked off) and the batter protects you.

There's no motive for Werth to swing on a steal there. If Ankiel was stealing he would have been in scoring position for Werth.

So I'm assuming it was a hit and run.

Yep.  The tweet referred to the starters in today's lineup.  SF referred to the youth and future.

Werth just hit it "too hard", to the wrong place?

Yup. Generally you want to go right side, but the pitch started in and broke to pretty much dead red so I can see how he turned on it.

Also, some teams cover with the shortstop in late innings in hit and run situations. So Werth might not have known which side of the infield would be empty.

Wait, Jim, why did you just pinch-hit FOR your best hitter? Isn't how you DON'T pinch-hit?

This guy throws 96 but he can't hit the strike zone. Don't swing.

Hey, Dan Runzler: how do you miss with a slider ABOVE the strike zone?
