Record while Zimmerman is out?
« on: April 12, 2011, 01:45:35 am »
How do you guys think the Nats will fare with Zimmerman out of the lineup?

Will they tank? Will they stay around .500? Will they somehow go on a run and keep their head above water while FotF is on the shelf?

Here's our next 19 games, which takes through the first weekend of May.  The series vs. the Mets would be when he's eligible to come off the DL.  The series following the Giants starts a road swing to Philly, Florida and Atlanta, all 3 gamers.

3 vs. Philly
3 vs. Milwaukee
3 @ St. Louis
3 @ Pittsburth
3 vs. NYM
4 vs. San Fran

It's nice that 13 of the next 19 are at home, I think that will help.  If he can get back before that trip after the San Fran series, that would be huge.  I think the road trip could be tough but St. Louis hasn't been anything special yet and we've done well in Pittsburgh.  I'll say they find a way to play .500 ball while he's out, assuming he comes back in time for the trip to Philly.  All things considered, the coming schedule could be a lot worse.

It was 15 days retro to Sunday, right?  There's an off day between Pitt and the Mets, which, by my count was day 15.

I don't know either.  15 days from Sunday is the 25th, which is the off day between the Pittsburgh series and Mets home stand.  They're saying he'll be out longer than that, but that's 15 days from Sunday.

Who says he'll be out longer? Just curious. I heard he would be taken off that monday... not sure though. I mean it just happened... which sucks :(

From Kilgore's story:

Quote
Third baseman Ryan Zimmerman will be placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained abdominal muscle, according to a team source. Zimmerman first dealt with the injury during spring training and severely aggravated it Saturday night against the New York Mets.

Zimmerman sat out Sunday’s game, meaning the soonest he could return is April 24. But Zimmerman will miss more time than that. The Nationals hope he will return in three weeks, but it could be longer. Until then, the Nationals will be without their best player and No. 3 hitter. Zimmerman, 26, also missed the final two weeks of last season with a strained oblique, an injury not related to this.
The other stories have said similar things, maybe not in such direct terms, so Kilgore may have been reading between the lines a bit more than the others.

Crap. Thanks. I didn't see this. Three weeks+ for an abdominal strain? Sheesh. It definitely seems like we are back in the 2007-2008 spring days. This sucks.

Where's the option for .700 ball?

It requires a pre-screening drug test.

So far they have a better record without him.

I voted .400 but I think they have a good shot to do better if the pitching holds up and Werth and Morse start hitting.  But I can live with .400 - take the best everyday player off any team and it's going to hurt.

Zim seems to get these types of nagging injuries every year.

That didn't sound right, so I checked his stats and Zimmm has played in 157 or more games in three of his five seasons, not bad at all.  Last year he missed 20 games and in 2008 he missed over 50.

I voted for .300 but I have a very good chance of being wrong. The way the other players have been playing this team has a good chance to benefit from a bit of a Ewing (Morneau) effect. If Morse, Werth, or LaRoche start hitting, Ramos gets more playing time, and Espinosa keeps up his play then the team could actually play better without Zimmerman. It depends on a lot of ifs which is why I voted for .300, but that doesn't mean it is impossible.

Well I guess not, then.  Maybe it just seems that way since they miss him so much when he's not there.

Let's see:

- Morse in a slump or the real one has shown up now that he's facing real MLB pitchers
- LaRoche is probably about to go on the DL for a pre-signing injury
- Our starters are due for a rude awakening
- The only thing our bench threatens is the Sizzling Express on M Street
- Our "beefy" defense is shaky at best

We'll be lucky to get .300 with the Z man out.

Morse/LaRoche/Werth will step up. They're due, slumps don't last forever.

Tonight would be a good night for them to break out. Blanton blows.

If they're not teeing off on Blanton this is going to be a long, painful series.

I think you'd have been better off to give W/L options for the poll rather than percentages as the ones given don't even make whole numbers.

I say we go 7 and 11 without Zimmerman, putting us at 11-16 overall after the Giants series.  And honestly, I'm being optimistic.  I just couldn't bring myself to predict 6-12.  Casting my vote for .400 since that's the closest available % to 7-11.

I'm with you.  7-13, if you count Sunday and all 19 games to the end of the SF series.

By the way, anyone else find it weird that Longoria has the same injury at same time?  I think Dave Cameron should investigate.

I have told everyone that they are actually clones of each other for a long time. They were crafted in a lab with the combined DNA of Brooks Robinson, Mike Schmidt, and George Brett.
