Anyone want to develop a Smoker profile?

It's interesting to do a search for "smoker" on the website.  His rankings as a prospect have popped up and down, but the conversion to a reliever revived interest in him.  Still seems walk-prone, but today was only the second time he's been scored on.  Came in in the middle of the 6th with a runner on, got his 2 outs, then walk the first two batters in the 7th, and one of them scored.

seems like smoker is taking a page out of the book of balester/kimball ... good stuff, some promising stuff but better suited for relieving.  maybe it will pay off.  i hope!

You have to like what Eury Perez has done lately.

Batting .419 with 3 Doubles, 4 RBIs, 5 SBs, 0 CS in his last 10 games.

BA on the season up to .313 with 12 SBs and only 1 CS.

SF - was there ever a thought that he'd develop power?  I think when I looked his SLG was the same as his OBP (which is 0 XBH).  I'm surprised he has not blind lucked his way to a triple.  Granted, he's just turned 21, but you'd like to see an occasional gap line drive.

I never heard any thought of him developing power. IMO he projects as a .300/.350/.400 hitter which can be valuable with 40+ SB potential and good outfield defense.

Eury has almost no power, but he can spray the ball.  Unfortunately, almost all of his hits are on the ground and he beats out a ton of infield throws.  Once he gets to AA and AAA (and eventually MLB), a lot of his infield singles will be stopped by better defenders.

Everytime I think of Eury, I think of Carlos Gomez with a bit of a higher AVG.

Not nessesarily.  Roger Bernadina is batting .300 right now and i'd guess that 60% of his hits have been in the infield, or barely squirting out.  He's only driven a few balls.

If Roger's still at .300 in a couple more weeks, I'll roll with this, but there's always the chance of a slump as defenses get ready for him.

I'm man-crushing a bit on Michael Taylor, CF - Hagerstown

He's had a much better May than April.

April - 58 AB - .172/.258/.293/.551 - 1HR, 5RBI, 6/18 BB/K, 5/2 SB/CS
May - 49 AB - .306/.358/.531/.889 - 2HR, 12RBI, 4/13 BB/K, 3/0 SB/CS

He's just turned 20, and he's been moved from SS to CF. Former 6th round pick in 2009 out of HS. Not sure if this is anything more than a hot streak... but it's always nice to see young guys show some improvement. Slightly intrigued by his power potential... 11/25 hits have been for extra bases.

I'm not so sure this is a good comparison.  Bernie actually has some power, so the infield has to respect that.  Eury Perez has almost no power.  Players with his skill set tend to encounter more problems as they move up the minor league ladder.  Does that mean it is not possible for him to succeed or hit for a decent average?  Absolutely not, just a point of a concern.

Always been a big fan of Taylor and Roberto Perez.  I think Taylor had a lot on his plate with the position change and promotion to Single A to start the season.  He is starting to come around now and is slowly working his way up the Suns lineup.

Trevor Holder had 7 scoreless innings tonight against Matusz and the Keys and then gave up 3 runs in the 8th inning to lose the game 3-2.

8 IP 6 H 3 ER 0 BB 5 K (Complete Game, loss)

He is 1-5 on the season with a 5.57 ERA. 23 Ks to 4 BBs in 42 IP. Pretty pedestrian overall and definitely not worth a 3rd round pick. Profiles as nothing more than a low-leverage middle reliever.

Didn't Rizzo say after drafting him that this guy was a bonafide Major League pitcher and they couldn't pass on him? :?

I think what he meant to say was, we drafted a guy 10 rounds too early cause we knew he'd sign.

In tandem with the Perez move, OF Jesus Valdez and P Ryan Mattheus have been bumped to AAA.

Mattheus, acquired in the Beimel trade (along with Robinson Fabian who was cut this year), has been excellent in relief for Harrisburg this season.  In 14.2 IP, he has let up 9 hits and 4 earned runs while striking out 18 and walking 5.

Mattheus has a major league deal, he needs to produce.

Josh Wilkie, the new Chiefs closer apparently, just picked up a save.  Craig Stammen gets the win.  Final score: 4-3 over the AAA-Orioles.

Daniel Rosenbaum's line at Potomac so far this year:

7 starts,  43.1 IP
36 H, 11 ER, 1 HR
19 BB, 34 K

7.06 K/9, 1.269 WHIP, .224 opponent average

Not exactly sexy, but pretty darn solid. He is, however, a 23-year-old in single-A.

Is Rosenbaum a ground ball guy or is he just getting lucky short term on flies?  .2 HR/9 is unusual.

We should have traded Detwiler 2 years ago.  I think he's out of options after this year.  Maybe it makes sense to turn him into a reliever - maybe replacing Slaten.

I know that lefties take longer to develop and tall lefties especially so, but he may very well top out now as a AAAA-ish or 5th starter with not so much trade value.
