Santangelo on the microphone
« on: March 13, 2011, 09:25:42 am »
This guy is a breath of fresh air IMO. Dibble tried to be the whole show, Santangelo is a nice piece of the puzzle, and he doesn't drive me crazy like Ray did.

The guy played, he managed, he's studied broadcasting and broadcasters, and he is only going to get better as he becomes more comfortable with the team.

I like Santangelo. We are getting some actual analysis and insight. When Santangelo analyzes pitch sequence, he has more to say than "throw the heater".

He interviewed Lannan and then broke down all his goals in spring training -- developing another pitch, working on performing better against lefties, etc.

I liked him

I miss Dibble

but I liked him

And Carpenter, who I couldn't stand for a long time is not so bad anymore

Radio guys are the greatest though, so that's where I'm going to be doing my listening regardless

Dibble was the bomb.  New guy seems like he is going to be really good though.

That is, unless Santangelo is sitting/standing on some dude named Mike.

Where did FP manage at?

Edit- I see PC is asking the same.

2nd Edit- I think he was a minor league hitting coach.

In this thread - http://www.wnff.net/index.php?topic=21590.0 - FP says he coached in the minor leagues. A quick googling has revealed no further details.

One thing got tiresome with Dibble that he'd yanmer on and on about a certain pitch that needed to be thrown and then the pitcher would throw the pitch and nag about why it was the wrong pitch to throw in that situation.

It's called the Tim McCarver syndrome.

Except Tim McCarver sounded like he was on the trading floor, whereas Dibble sounded like he was at a parole hearing.

I never understand the criticism of Carp except for his overzealous pop up calls. He's very professional and good at his job.

Exactly.  He's a pro, and he's had to carry the broadcast with a series of sidekicks with major deficiencies.

kinda quiet, but dude does he know what he is talking about.  will grow on everyone i think.  i think he's one of those types that is absolutely grateful for the opportunity, so he's gonna give 110% on the job.

I think the quiet thing will pass as he gets used to everything.  I thought the second broadcast he already sounded more comfortable.

In person Carpy is much cooler than you would expect too.  And, as Nathan pointed out, he makes the best scorebook ever.

I noticed Carpenter threw in a 'jammage' in one of the recent broadcasts - Dibble is lives on in Carp's broadcasting.  Maybe he'll show up tatted up on the next broadcast.

Sorry, that should have been coached. He had said he had coached in the minors. In listing the combination of perspectives - on the field, from the field, from the booth - was simply pointing out that he had experience coaching, but mistakenly referred to his coaching experience as managing. He didn't specify what the role was, but I confused coach with manage in the list of actual skills.

What's good is that oftern you get a guy in the booth who is an ex player who never coached in the pro ranks, or a manager who never played successfully, so it is nice to have someone with both perspectives. More importantly, a lot of those guys don't really have any formal broadcast training or skills, and in F.P.'s case, he actually majored in broadcast journalism in college and has had his own radio show.

My dream announcer for here would have been Sean McDonough.  He'll be doing Monday nights on ESPN with Aaron Boone and I think Sutcliffe this year.  He brings out the best in any color guy and has a great sense of humor about absurd things in the game.

Got him and Dibble to snap a pic with us at Crystal City sports pub after the Friday night game against the Giants last summer.  They were both really cool
