Did you see Cameron's article on the signing on fangraphs? I think all should read that and Passan's article.
read Cameron.  Guessed about an $8MM overpay with a reasonable inflation rate.  Can you link to Passan?

Also, one of my points here is that some people here who are jumping on the length of this contract and assuming Werth breaks down after year 3 dismissed the argument that Dunn's body is the type that breaks down quickly once it goes.  I'm just calling out the hypocrisy.

You must be thinking the Nats are going to extend Werth two more years, since his current contract will expire while he's 38.

Considering everyone in the thread was saying he's 32 now, I wasn't really thinking that much about it, to be honest.

Hell, when his last year is up, he'll have played nearly the entire season as a 39 year old... so my 'math' isn't that far off to begin with.

No, they didn't.  They said that you pay the four years to get the first three.  What does it matter anyway?  Pretty much everyone here is in agreement that it's a good pickup with an overpay contract.  The only sticking point is on the degree of overpay.

Should've had Dunn, too.  But we'll see what else they do this Winter.

I'm happy.

If Werth slows after four seasons, the Nats have only lost some money. Having a valuable player counts far more. For once, I'm not saying the Lerners are foolish. (I wish they'd kept Dunn, but what's done is etc).

Incidentally, I believe that the "body type" discussion is over-analysis. Ted Williams said that hitting is all about eyes and reflexes.

He was born 5/20/79, which makes him 31 now.  It's an important distinction for this particular argument.

He'll be 32 just a month into the season.

The point is this.

Anyone that this a 37-38 year old Werth is going to be worth what he's making... well, I've got a bridge to sell them.

Once again, I apologize for not going all fanboy over a deal that is grotesque and most likely will make the Lerners think twice about giving out big money deals in the future.

I like this from the payroll analysis thread:

With Werth on board, The Nationals have about 62 Million in commitments. Close to last year's payroll.

How precise this calculation is aside, this is an important point for two reasons. On the one hand, it shows that despite going way over market to land Werth, it is not like they have really pumped up the net overall spending. On the other hand, that shows that they still have plenty of flexibility to do more.

And 38 on 10/17 when his contract expires.

Just past a month, and he'll turn 38 during the final year of his contract.  He will never be 39, never be 40 under this contract.  Are you still going to argue this point?

You're right. I should never have worrisome thoughts about giving a 39-40 year old an 18 million dollar a year contract.

What was I thinking?

Good gosh. I love Werth, I'm glad the Nats got him... I just think I won't be liking him so much seven years from now when he's killing our payroll.

Sorry for sharing what I feel like is a pretty common viewpoint.

Love the signing/player.... hate the deal.

And yes, I think Dunn at age 35 will be a better player than Werth at age 37, 38, 39, 40.

FWIW, say we get 4 good years out of him, then trade him to an AL club to DH even if we have to eat a portion of his salary, isn't that the price we have to pay if we want a top-flight FA at this point in the club's development?

Thanks, ass. Tom, JCA and the world already told me. But, I'm glad you told me as well... it'll sink in this time.

38 year old Werth = noose around Nats payroll.

Replace 4 with 3 and guess who we're talking about :halo:

Can't believe some of you are riding Linty's ass over an irrelevant math error.

Nobody would want to pound the point home if you would just admit when you make a mistake, instead of trying to argue your way out of it.  You can't argue your way out of a math error.

I wasn't aware that Dominic Brown was sent home from winter-ball after playing like crap, the Phillies have a huge gaping hole in RF and they also need to do something about LF.  There is a very good chance that they are vulnerable next year (well, maybe if one of the big 3 needs TJ surgery).

WTF difference does it make?  You guys are being jerks about something that has no effect on his main argument.

Does this signing mean that there is no absolute requirement for the Nats to put Nyjer Morgan in CF? As in: Werth RF, Bernadina CF, Willinham LF (until he gets hurt).

There would be no need to if he wouldn't argue about it.  And when we're talking about the last few years of a contract, and how old Werth will be as a factor in his expected declining production, whether he's 33-40 or 31-38 is very germaine to the discussion.

Now you're attempting to slyly compound his error to inflate your position?  Nice

I'm pretty sure no one has anything original left to say in this thread.

Rizzo talking to Gammons on MLB Network right now.  Says Werth to play right.  Rizzo says body type, health makes him likely to play out all 7 years.  Recognizes risk, but Werth thinks Werth is "just scratching the surface" of what he can do and is a "young" 31.

Nah, look back at his posts, he had 40 as the outer boundary of Werth's age, as if he's turning 40 the last year.  I'm just in favor of full transparency - of honesty, integrity, of fairness and objectivity - it is the American Way.

So Bernadina/Morgan to battle it out for CF?
