Generally I like Rizzo.  He makes really edgy moves and is pretty aggressive with his drafting.  He realized the cost the Nats had to sink to get a real free agent and regardless of what Werth is doing on the field, I have a strong belief that he has led the team to shedding the crap ways and becoming a team with a winning mindset.

That being said, I think he understands more than anyone that he has to be quiet yet aggressive at the trade deadline to get another piece.  Obviously the team needs a pitcher if they intend to shut Stras down, and although reports say Dempster wants to go to either the Yanks or Braves, he makes the best sense for the Nats.  The Yanks and Braves should be looking into a long term piece because they don't have the young corps the Nats do.  The Nats need a plug in starter that provides strong stuff for a playoff run.

Still need to address catcher and potentially one more real bat in the lineup.

Werth and Tracy don't get hurt and our bench is Lombardozzi, Bernadina, Ankiel, Chad Tracy, and Tyler Moore.

That's not bad.

I don't either, although for complete disclosure I must admit that I was getting ready to demand that Stras be shut down immediately and the manager and GM both be fired right before we got those runs in the tenth.

No, it's not, but you have to expect some of your guys will get injured every year.

I think at the trade deadline we'll pass on a pitcher - vote of confidence in Lannan (for September) and Detwiler (for the playoffs) - but acquire a catcher and maybe a reliever.

I've said it before... But Huntington will be the next GM to get a book deal.

Neal Huntington says hello.

Rizzo made some moves this off-season that directly lead to our success (Gio, E-Jax). Both have built well internally.

Also, the season isn't over. If the season finished today, Rizzo would have the best NL record and Huntington the wild card. Lots of season to go.

Trading for Burnett turned out huge for the Pirates.

Huntington is a good GM, no question, but what, exactly, were the big moves he made this year?  He didn't sign his draft pick, and the Pirates' two biggest offseason moves--Bedard and Barnes--have been kind of miserable.  Does he deserve credit for actually getting some real talent into the Pirates system?  Absolutely.  But a lot of the Nats' success this year can be pretty directly attributed to Rizzo's offseason moves.  That's the key differentiator, I think.

But do you judge an exec of the year award based on their moves in the past season or the culmination of their efforts that lead to that season?

I'm not really sold on Pittsburgh.  They've had a great past 30 days or so.  On June 15, they were 32-31.  Since then, they've gone 18-9.

I think the Reds are better and the Cards are probably better as well.

Their payroll is only around $50 mil, so he has managed to put together a pretty good team on a shoestring budget and he deserves credit for that.  I'm not sure he'll win any awards for that, though.  And, as has been noted here, it's a lot harder to go from .500 to a good team than it is to go from really bad to .500.

.500 to good team with no high priced free agents and no salary? He's doing it on a budget that makes the Lerners look like high rollers, AJ Burnett (at $13 million over 2 years) is their highest priced pitcher, even McCutchen doesn't touch $10 million until 2015.

Aren't the Noo York Jankees paying some of Burnett's salary?

Took me a few minutes to realize you were talking about A.J. and not Sean (which obviously would have made zero sense).

Guess I need more coffee.

Either way, that turned out to be a killer deal for them.  I really thought AJ Burnett was completely done and ready for the glue factory.  Turns out I was wrong.  Erik Bedard is still a bum though.

I don't think Huntington should be graded on a curve based on the cheapness of the Pirates ownership.

so Brian Cashman, 6 pennants and 4 rings, is the best GM in the game?
