he was bad on sunday ... but against the cubs he pitched a quality start (no way getting around that) and pitched a gem against the brewers and then got the win against the mets. 

i think he'll come around.

Quality start is an assmango stat.  He walked 5, gave up 5 hits and had 1 measly K that day.  Nothing "quality" about it.  He did pitch well against Milwaukee.  He got the "win" against the Mutts pitching 5 while giving up 6 hits, 3 walks and only 2 K.  Not a good start at all and further proof that pitcher wins are a stupid stat.

1 good start in 6, that is all.

Obviously I'd love to eat my words, but I don't want to pile up Patterson losses giving him infinite chances. This is a put up or shut up season, as the talent is stacking up.

Patterson hobbled the team, every start was a guaranteed 3 inning loss. He was the Hanrahan of 2006.

For Lannan starts, the record is 3-3. 3 QS (lame stat), 2 craptastic, P word games. 3 more P word games, and you have to sit the guy. Is that an extreme viewpoint?

I'm also ridiculously impatient as there's FINALLY a major league squad still within reach of contention in May.

I think Lannan's steady track record the past couple of years has earned him the opportunity to try and right the ship until the calvary arrives in June.  If he's still throwing out clunker after clunker, then yeah, I think you have to look at moving him to the pen or something.

at the same time ... i think john lannan can do better and he should be better than the way he is pitching.  hopefully he can turn it around soon.

The early Beane era A's were competitive with a tiny payroll due to being ahead of the curve on sabermetrics.

Being a fan of sabermetrics and actually using them are two different things.  Acta was the former, but hardly did the latter.

Lanan seems like a decent guy, but it's becoming obvious he's a 4-5 starter at best.

Still, Strasburg, Wang, J-Zimm, Detwiller, Lanan could be a decent starting 5, with plenty of other guys to fill in during injury time.

I don't think you can go all one way or another and understand everything. The red sox still needed Dave Roberts to win the world series. All theories have value the smartest people are able to use all information and their disposal and not buy in too hard to any one theory.

Exactly.  In player development/evaluation, you identify with sabermetrics the kind of things you want.  You then use the eye test to draft those you think will best fit that kind of team, identify which players aren't living up to the expected level of play and attempt to define why that is happening, and have a starting point for identifying who you may want to pick up/trade for when the situation arises.

In a case like Lannan you ride the unexpected success as long as you can while still getting out before it's too late.  He's smart/savvy enough to carve out a pretty lengthy career.  He seems like the kind of guy who will find a way to stick, even if it's just as a lefty specialist in the pen, for far longer than his peripheral stats and talent would tend to predict.  Whether he's in Syracuse, the bullpen, or some other team, I'm sure he'll be around for quite a while.

1-2 with a 6.20ERA in 5 starts for 'Cuse.  Did pick up his first win tonite (5/3/2010) over Columbus.

Always sucks against the Marlins/Phillies.  He has to stop that crap if he wants to be on this team for the long haul.

We play too many games against the Marlins/Phillies to have a SP who cannot do the job.  
I see Lannan headed to the bullpen.

A #5 starter stinks for most teams; they hope for some wins, or to stay in those games with their own bats.  Lannan walks too many guys, and strikes out few.  

The Nationals are near the bottom of MLB in strikeouts thrown by their pitchers.  Can't contend that way.
