I think Ayala was on a rehab assignment.

Upon further research......

8/29/09 -Florida Marlins recalled RHP Luis Ayala from New Orleans Zephyrs.

He appeared on the 29th, gave up 3 earned runs in 1/3 of an inning, then

9/1/09 -Florida Marlins designated RHP Luis Ayala for assignment.

So they basically gave him one last shot and he stunk up the joint yet again, and they released him.  Okay.

I don't disagree with your sentiment, but Ayala was in the minors before being called up, and then almost immediately released, without even taking the mound again.  What up with that?  Why would they do that to any player?

He was signed to a minor league deal on July 4, and was called up on July 12.  He was optioned on August 8, called up again August 29, and then DA'd after that game (officially DA'd September 1).  He refused the assignment and became a FA on September 6 (TSN)

He made 10 appearances for the Fish, but only lasted 7.2 IP thanks to 12 H, 6 BB, 10 R (all earned).

Byrd named AL Player of the Week

Rangers OF hit three jacks in period ending Sunday

By Tom Singer / MLB.com 09/28/09 3:20 PM ET

Texas outfielder Marlon Byrd reigns as the American League Player of the Week presented by Bank of America, for the period ending Sunday, after leading the league with 11 RBIs and sharing the lead with three home runs -- one of them of the historic variety.
Byrd's second career weekly award -- he'd previously been honored for the week ending Aug. 11, 2008 -- also recognized his .760 slugging and .433 on-base percentages.

The 32-year-old former 10th-round pick (1999) doesn't squander his big flies.

His grand slam in the fifth-inning of Saturday's 15-3 victory over Tampa Bay was the 59th homer of his career -- and the sixth slam.

That left Byrd without company: According to the Elias Sports Bureau, he is the first player in Major League history with that many grand slams out of fewer than 60 homers.

Others considered for the award included the Tigers' Carlos Guillen (Majors-leading .563 average and 1.125 slugging percentage); Yankees closer Mariano Rivera (four saves as the Bombers nailed down the East Division title); Royals right-hander Zack Greinke (2-0 with an ERA of 0.69 ERA); and Twins outfielder Denard Span (six-RBI game on Saturday).

Byrd's been a real solid player since we gave up on him.   :?

I took Rudy Jaramillo to get him to turn on the inside fastball.

If it happens, truly, I will join the ranks of LAC hardcore because I can't think of a cheaper and stupider move. Such a move would prove without a doubt the lack of commitment ownership, Kasten and Rizzo have to building a winner here in D.C.

Fortunately, I highly doubt it will ever happen.

eh, whatever. I'd bring him back for league minimum as a reliever.

if he can't hack it as a reliever with the limited innings a reliever throws, then he should really just retire.

but under no circumstance should be ever be relied on as a starter.

If you have to ask that, you haven't been paying attention the past few years.

I mean it - call him up if/when 7 or so starters are hurt. Sign him to a deal with an option and send him back when a guy gets un-DL'ed. Bacsik.

Why would you even waste the time, money and resources? This guy should not even be paid $20 to pitch batting practice. No, Nats fans, there is no Santa Claus. Nor is there a healthy Shawn Hill.

By the way, what is ole' Bacsik up to these days other than signing "I gave up 756" on baseballs at backwoods sports conventions?

Not as entertaining as the love-fest for bum players.

EDIT: The Nats can't be that stupid so I'm really not worried at all. Maybe if JimBo was still here, I might be.

you care to point out the love-fest for me? If that's more entertaining, then I'd love to see it as well.

Any Nat fan wanting Shawn Hill back for any sort of go around is nuts. To steal a line from Hammonds, "I'm glad someone is enjoying all the losing."

it's just as ridiculous that they want livan back, just because he likes the city and the team and played here in '05 and '06.

ok. I recognize that your vision turns red whenever someone says Shawn Hill.

but where's this so-called "lovefest"?

what, cause I said i wouldn't care if they brought him back at league minimum?

they won't do it. and even if they did, it wouldn't hurt anything really, unless they expected him to be a starter. which I'm vehemently against.

if the guy can pitch an inning a game for league minimum, then what exactly do we lose? if he can't, then cut him, and we basically pay nothing. its not like we've got a studly bullpen going on here. all options should be at least considered for at least 1.5 seconds.

really, i don't care either way. I'm not jumping for joy at the possibility of him coming back, but I'm not foaming at the mouth about it either.

he'll probably end up in a minor league system somewhere as inventory, which is basically what he should be at this point. if its ours, eh whatever. if elsewhere, eh whatever.

I don't even know why you'd even want to waste time with a player that gives you this type of attitude. The "Shawn Hill Option" was considered for more than 1.5 seconds. It was considered for almost four years and was a complete failure. He can hardly walk to the mound. Like you said, it isn't going to happen so-- whatever. I'm going to make a Sombrero.

If the Nats want a pitcher with a history of injuries they can sign Ben Sheets.

I want a staff with new injuries, not old recycled injuiries.  Give me your Sheetses, Bedardses, Hardens, not these old Hills.

By the way, are they going to bring back John Patterson?  I mean, to serve at the Five Guys, not to actually pitch.  Maybe they should have a "lame signing of the night" guest fry machine operator.  On second thought, why mess up the fries at Five Guys.  Some things are important.

In truth, I'm not so against signing a guy recovering from injuries if there is a decent likelihood that he'll actually recover.  I'd take real hard look at Sheets / Harden / Bedard.  The unfortunate problem with Hill and Patterson was that they were in the small percentage that don't properly recover from TJ surgery or had other problems that just could not be detected or remedied.

Hill is probably going to get a minor league contract or play in an Indy league if he still wants to pursue baseball.

Halama to the Brewers

Do they still have Colome, or did they demote him back to Montana?
