A guy in the 3d base boxes down the line threw a slice of cheese pizza at Garret Anderson when he went for a foul. Arrested the thug. Pat the Bat flies off the wall. Hermida throws him out going into 2d. Another fly to Hermida and Atchison has another scoreless inning.

Hermida actually looks like a good signing. They are trying to find him times at bat v RHP. Looks like a steal.

Jeez, I hope it was cold pizza.

Yes. Until 2004, Red Sox fans were the equivalent of Cubs fans were in the NL. Sanctimonious and self righteous, feeling like they were better than the rest of us for being fans of THEIR team and that the baseball Gods owed them something for it. Once the Red Sox won the Series a few times, they became exponentially more sanctimonious and self righteous, actually believe they are better than the rest of us for being fans of the Carmines, and believe that the baseball Gods still owed them another title. I warn the locals here in Chicago that Cubs fans would be even more insufferable than Boston fans if they should somehow ever win the title.

In the sum up, the Red Sox announcers (MLB Network picked up their broadcast) made it pretty clear that the Rays are a much better team right now than the way the Red Sox are playing. There was a lot of concern when Theo was talking about this being a "bridge year" before the minor league system produces more position players. The "run prevention" strategy did not look good the past couple of days with 2 of the 3 "aces" getting hit hard and the back ups (esp. Hall) looking lost in the field. Not white flag time, but it is tough to spot both TB and the NYY 6 or 7 games. Even the NYY only had to catch (and pass) the Red Sox last year and not also TB. Thankfully, it's early.

Also - go Twins.

Run prevention strategy only works if the other team isn't shooting the gaps, banging doubles off the wall or knocking it out of the park...

He's also a great glove man.

What happened was that teams didn't value his type of hitting at the time. He's a very all or nothing type hitter.

Ugh, damn. Id love to have him at first. Woulda been better than what we've had the past years (with Dunn as an exception and NJ's one year of play)

True but was Pena a free agent when Dmitri was? Just curious why one would choose Dmitri. I know its hard to say for back then but Pena was young and had some nice numbers compared to Dmitri.

Pena was a free agent. He didn't want to come to a team that already had a quality firstbaseman

You may have been reading where I was saying I'd like us to get Carlos Pena and just trade Dunn this season or not sign him to an extension if his bat doesn't pick up.

This may not be worthwhile though. It depends on Marrero's development and the possible return for Dunn. If the return for Dunn isn't better than mid first rounder or second rounder (depends on where the Nats finish this year), then you'd want to just keep him because Pena is likely a type A.

Bowden had a relationship with Dmitri and wanted to give him a chance to get back to the majors. BR has Pena signing on 1/28/07 as a Minor League Free Agent with an invite. Young was signed on 2/14 of that year. Pena would not have made the Rays had Greg Norton not been hurt. I forget if they were also looking at Gomes for 1b at the time. Making the team was not assured, and he went there before the Nats slot for Opening Day starter was filled. IIRC, Nick was already hurt but thought to be coming back, so it is almost like there was a better shot to break camp with the Nats than with the Rays. This one is completely a Bowden call.

Nick was due back in the beginning of May. I'm not trying to justify Bowden's lack of effort, only stating that Pena may have wanted a chance to earn an everyday spot.
