I cannot see any way he starts 2012 on the roster. The earliest I could imagine would be the beginning of May. One month of minor leagues gives the Nationals one extra year of service time before free agency. A tradeoff I'd make any day.

Harper has a major league deal - how does service time affect his arbitration and all of that stuff?

His contract type has nothing to do with service time. What his contract does is make it so he has to be on the 25 man roster by 2015 ( he has 4 option years). Because he is signed through 2015, he can't become a Super 2 if he is brought up after he can not accrue 172 service days (one service year) in 2012. I've heard that the new CBA, raises the number of Super 2 from the top 17% to the top 22 %.

Why it's bad for your top prospect to be 18 years old... and having a twitter account.

I see nothing wrong with this. Just a way for Bryce to throw props at a musician he likes.

Twitter is a great equalizer.  It lets people knock themselves off of the pedestal that fans put them on.

Give me a effing break(well more like a Harper a break) You really think he was being serious in his tweets. It's called a sense of humor and for some people it's too hard to take a joke. I mean bloody hell, next thing in the news will be how Harper took too big of a crap in the toilet.

I don't know if this was posted in the CBA thread, but Zuckerman noted in his blog today that Harper's debut will likely be delayed by a month based on a change to the Super 2.  Might be worth picking up July 3rd and July 17th in your ticket drafts if you want to say that you were there.

Pretty lame item from Deadspin, must be a slow news day.  First of all their headline is completely misleading, Harper made the request to Wale, not multiple rappers, secondly I guarantee that Harper was just kidding around, hard to be sure based on a 140 character Tweet, but Harper's actual post certainly had a different tone than what you'd expect from reading the headline.  Finally DeadSpin takes a shot at Wale, calling him a failure, as if their blog had a fraction of Wale's following.

Not to quibble but Deadspin's readership probably dwarfs Wale (Wall-E) fanbase.

Kilgore had a great explanation of why Super 2 matters for Bryce.
Quote
Harper’s situation does make for an interesting hypothetical: Harper was drafted in 2010 and signed a five-year major league deal. Say he debuts at a point early enough in the 2012 season that he becomes a Super Two. (Again, that’s an incredible longshot. Just hypothetical.) Because of the five-year contract, Harper already has a 2015 salary committed to him. But, under this scenario, he would also be eligible for arbitration in 2015.

How, then, would his 2015 salary be determined under this scenario? Does the pre-determined salary override the arbitration eligibility? Or does the fact that the player became eligible for arbitration mean you throw out the 2015 number?

The answer: In almost every major-league contract signed coming out of the draft, players can opt out of any remaining years if they are arbitration eligible so that they can utilize the arbitration rights. I’m not 100-percent sure about Harper’s deal, but here’s guessing Scott Boras didn’t forget to add the opt-out clause

Maybe so, but Deadspin gives away their product for free. I'm not a reader so I have no idea of their click counts but I can say that if their bloggers were hosting an event down the street tonight I'd have absolutely no interest in attending, while Wale just might get me out the door.

Kilgore also threw in a mention that holding Harper out until July was a smart baseball decision, not a cheapskate move, what other MLB club requires this disclaimer?
