I'm rooting for Detroit over the twins for one reason: Miguel Cabrera.

Our league stayed open for tonight because the stats count for the regular season. I had several ways to get back into a tie. Gomez steal or homer, a win by Rodney or Seay, would be owrht a half point each, and if the relievers had a WHIP < 1, I had a point. For one batter, Rodney's first out, I had the tie. After that, not so much.

Am I the only one looking at the Twins lineup and wondering how the heck this team made the playoffs? Outside of Mauer who is there to be afraid of?

It just tells you that defense and pitching are the key to success in this league.

Cuddyer, Kubel, and Morneau all had good seasons at the dish.

Their problem is the lack of formidable hitting aside from that heart of the order. They were a lot like the Nats once we lost Flores.

They basically have 4 John Lannans in their rotation.

True. What killed them was Liriano's injury and two bad trades: Santana and Garza / Bartlett. The GM played it cute trying to paly the Red Sox off against the NYY and ended up with a lot less than they were offering for the right to overpay Santana. Delmon Young may still turn out OK (he had a decent 2d half), but they ended up with an outfield surplus when Span panned out and Kubel became healthy. They could really use a power arm to go with Blackburn and Baker.

As for their bullpen, it shows the streakiness of bullpens. A few years ago they were incredibly deep (Crain had 8 wins, Romero and Rincon were effective, Guerrier was on the way) in front of Nathan. Actually, it kind of sounds like Rauch, Ayala, Rivera, and Schroeder in front of Chad, except Nathan is better than Chad in his prime. Or at least until he threw that meatball to A-Rod.

Is this not the worst year ever for MLB playoffs though? Last nights game was almost as bad as watching the Nats bullpen.

Actually, I loved the 7th, 8th and 9th last night. In the 7th, you got to see that even good teams with good bullpens implode. I admit I would have gone with my best reliever in place of a fading Lackey at the point Scioscia did it, and I can't stand the Scioscia hype machine. Then to come back in the bottom of the inning? Any time (other than Game 3 of the ALDS) Vlady delivers is cool. Rivera's getting out of the 8th was cool too, and waiting for the Fuentes failure that did not happen brought back memories of all the cardio stressing closers of the past.

I think if the Nats had played .500 ball nobody would have noticed the lack of September suspense.
