What's self evident is that wins are what puts you in the play-offs. Winning games is how a team is measured.

There's the rub. It's how a TEAM is measured, but wins as a stat for individuals doesn't indicate their personal skill level, since they're actually contingent upon the performance of teammates.

The fact remains that winning games is all that counts. No statistic can show that Johan Santana throws a wicked change up.All statistics are seriously flawed. Counting on any single statistic is stupid.

Well no crap.

But using wins to assess pitcher is flawed. Period. You can synthesize better metrics and pure observation if you want a good picture.

My other favorite team, the Cleveland Indians shut out the White Sox today behind a commanding start from ace Cliff Lee.

7IP, 0R, 9/1 K/BB.

Lee is right at a 3.00 ERA for the year yet he's only 2-5. Talk about crappy run support.

Talk about crappy run support, Johan Santana has lost two games this year in which he didn't give up an earned run.

have you seen his PECOTA projection? Nate Silver et al think he's a sub-4 ERA, 3:1 K:BB pitcher already. I stole him in my AL fantasy free agent pool for $2, and it is a keeper league. Phil Hughes went for $30 that same week.

Rookie David Huff is on the hill for the Indians making his major league debut.

Only problem is the Indians don't have him on the line up. Umps just called the Tribe off the field and are calling MLB to see what to do.

What a story this guy will have for his first start... if the Umps let him make it.
