I only got to listen to the second part of the Hagerstown double header, but Patrick Arnold sounded good. Prior to today he had pitched 7 games in relief for the Suns, so tonight was his first start. Obviously, he hasn't been stretched out yet. The first three innings were all 1-2-3 innings for him, he was helped by a DP in one inning. In each of the first three innings he threw first pitch strikes to every batter he faced. He fell behind to batters only twice in those three innings, one time it ended in a DP and the other it was a single.

In the fourth inning, he probably started to lose it a bit because of fatigue and gave up walk-double-walk to the first three batters. He then got another double play to limit the damage to one run, before he was pulled. Arnold is going to be a good starter for our system down the road, he just goes after the strikezone and attacks batters, forcing them to swing at stuff they might not want to. He threw FPS to 11 out of 13 batters, threw no balls to 6 of those batters, and threw 66% strikes. I don't know if they are going to keep using him as a starter; they probably will try to get more innings out of him as long as Pecina is out, but there is no reason they shouldn't have him starting once short-season starts.

no reason for them to pull him, how many pitches is he at?

If he is at less than 70 pitches, I think it would be idiotic for Stearns to pull him at this point. They need to know if he can go deep.

Incredibly encouraging start for Detwiler. I think the best part of this start was that his WHIP was a total of 1.00 for the game. I don't know how may starts I've seen Detwiler go 5 innings giving up 7 hits and 3 walks but only giving up two runs. If he can start putting a string of these starts together, perhaps we won't have to move him to the pen just yet.

couldn't tell ya. i know he's faced 20 batters. he got to a couple 3-2 counts, but obviously just one walk.

i'm sure he could go another inning, but with the rain about to come down in harrisburg and the doubleheader/7 inning format allowing for bullpen to be stretched out ... it wouldn't surprise me if he doesn't come out for the 6th.

yeah. i still have hopes for him as a starter. if not we can move him to the pen, but he has shown flashes that he can be pretty solid middle rotation option.

Nice start for him, I can understand him being pulled if it was raining as a precaution. At some point though, they are going to have to see if he can go past five innings, I can't remember any start in his career where he has. It is does no one any good having him do five innings every 5 days, not him, not the organization, not his future as a starter.

almost all of our starters in our system only go 5 innings.

Espinosa homered again for Potomac!

His 4 homers so far this season have been a pleasant surprise. I didn't think he had this much power.

Burgess is 3/3 today with a HR and 3 RBIs. That was his 6th long ball.

We drafted him in the third round so yes right now he looks like a bust.

Why isn't he stealing any bases anymore? The only good thing he is doing right now is drawing walks.

That isn't true, they just let McGeary go 6 today. They have let Stammen go 6 and 7 innings during starts this season and Balestar has had multiple six inning outings. Atilano went 6.0 innings on April 25. Mandel has had outings of 5.2, 6.0, and 7.0 this season. They let Meyers go 5.2, 7.2, and 6.0. Peacock went 7.0 in his first start of the season! Even Milone has gone past 5 innings. Detwiler just hasn't ever pitched well enough to ever go past 5.0. If you pitch well enough, the organization will let you go deeper than 5.

His fielding is pretty bad too. I just didn't see it in him when I saw him last year. Shame.

they don't push them enough throughout the system in general.

We really need to see more 6-7+ innings starts.

This may be true, but part of it has been our pitchers just breaking down late in the game. The offense at a lot of our farm teams isn't the best and you can't leave a guy in there that is going to give up the lead. After all, the minor league managers want the W too. In Detwiler's case, they baby him so much that when he does have a good outing, they pull him by the 5th. That is about 10% of the time. The other 90% of the time, Detwiler breaks down by the 5th inning and they have no choice but to pull him (especially at Harrisburg).

Mandel with 6 nice innings for Potomac today: 6 IP 3 H 1 R 1 ER 2 BB 2 K.

He's had a real nice start to the season. Him and Meyers have been fantastic. I'd like to see them in AA at some point this year to see how they do.

Bases loaded in the bottom of the 7th with two outs with Dan Leatherman on the mound. They shouldn't have pulled Mandel, another dumb decision.

EDIT: god, Leatherman just let up a double down the line. P-Nats up 5-3 with the Mike Moustakas, the #1 prospect in the KC organization, up to bat.

yeah, I'm listening too. they said Leatherman hadn't pitched in like a week. ugh, this would be a nice win for Potomac. they are almost in 1st place in their division.

Yeah, I understand they wanted Leatherman to get some work, they should have let him do it the second game, though (Atwood on the mound?). Well, at least they are bringing in Severino.

Jeez, what a finish. Severino has been perfect as the closer this year, I like what I saw from him last year as well. He is getting a little old for A+ ball, I hope he gets a chance at AA, because they could use some relievers up there.

Mandel and Meyers are two of the best pitchers currently in the Carolina league and Willems will be sure to join them after a few starts.

wow, crazy. I had the Chiefs' gameday up and I saw that Milledge got called out on strikes and I thought to myself that I bet he gets tossed and lo-and-behold it happens:

burgess average is up to .212. his goal should be to raise that to .260-.270 this month. his power numbers are great thought.
