Derek Norris is sizzling hot. He went 2/4 with a HR, 2 Runs, and a walk in Hagerstown's 6-3 victory today.

Norris' season numbers: (.292/.397/.583), 7 Doubles, 7 HRs, 25 RBIs, 17 BBs, 28 Ks, 2 SBs, 1 CS.

He's second in the Sally league in walks (17), third in homers (7), and tied for first in RBIs (25).

yup i saw that.  that's great news.  here's rotoworld's take on him from the other day:

Quote
Low Single-A Hagerstown's Derek Norris went 3-for-4 and hit his sixth homer Sunday.

There's an awful lot to like about Norris' bat, and the 20-year-old is off to a .270/.374/.539 start in 89 at-bats for Hagerstown. He's going to have a difficult time lasting behind the plate, but he might be strong enough offensively to make it as a first baseman or corner outfielder.

Whats the scouting report on his defense?

Is he ahead of Nieto on the Nationals depth chart? I'm hoping for a situation like the Braves where they had 2 top prospects at catcher.

He's definitely ahead of Nieto. Nieto hasn't even played in Low A ball yet.

Norris is mashing as a 20 year-old in A ball. If he keeps this up he may find himself in Potomac by the end of the season.

From what I have heard, Norris is still a bit of a work in progress defensively. He only made the switch to catcher in his junior year of high school (was a 3B) so he is still learning the ins and outs.

NFA Brian, can you tell us more about Arnesen?  i know he has a solid sinking fastball and has pretty good K numbers ... what other pitches does he have in his arsenal?  Sounds like he's projecting as a #4 starter.

yeah that's a good match-up.  he gets to face wieters, salazar and reimold all good hitters.  fiorentino and gathright also have mlb experience.

Do you guys think that Detwiler could be a starter in the 2010 rotation?

That about nails Arnesen. You got his fastball. He has a workable curve and a developing changeup. Back of the rotation is his ceiling but that's pretty good given where he started

Do you guys think that Detwiler could be a starter in the 2010 rotation?

Possibly. First, Detwiler needs to show consistency. If he can build upon the last two starts over a few months that will be a solid start. The second and more important thing is that he needs to learn how to be economical with his pitches. If he can develop that solid out pitch when he gets ahead in counts or finds a way to pitch to contact with groundballs that will make the chances of a rotation spot in 2010 more of a possibility

disastrous start by Balester tonight: 3 IP 11 H 7 R 7 ER 0 BB 1 K 1 HR.

He will fall to 1-5 on the season with a 6.35 ERA. Opposing batters are hitting .347 against him.

yikes, at least it was a nice day though right?  rough day for our 3 studs espinosa/marrero/burgess going a combined 2-for-12 with 2 errors.  atwood has an era close to 10.  ouch.

Oh yeah, it was a beautiful day to go to a game.  Except for the top of the 5th, it was mostly a nice pitching duel.

maybe. he has been really struggling lately though. He's a streaky guy. It seems to me like he is sacrificing contact/BA for more power. His BA is down to .269.

Everts has been really good. they are foolish for not putting him in AA. Too old for A+ and Harrisburg could really use the help.

colome has been terrible recently.  era over 6.  bergmann and macdougal each pitched a shutout inning (but combined for 3 walks).

if he has more outings like this, than he will be bumped up shortly.  good to see him have a good start though.
