Licey defeated the Gigantes today 4-3 in 12 innings to take the best-of-9 series 5 games to none.

Licey advances to the Caribbean World Series which also features the champion of the Puerto Rican Winter League (Ponce), and the champions of the Venezuelan Winter League (still playing), and Mexican League (still playing).

The 2009 Caribbean World Series takes place in Mexicali and begins on Monday, February 2nd and ends on Saturday, February 7th.

The format is a 12-game round robin structure in which each of the 4 teams play 6 total games.

The team with the best record at the end of the series is declared the Caribbean World Series Champion.

The Washington Nationals have several players on the Licey Tigres team including Daniel Cabrera, Ronnie Belliard, Jesus Flores, and Anderson Hernandez.

Los Venados de Mazatlan have clinched the Mexican League Title.

The only league that has yet to reach a champion is the VWL. Caracas currently has a 2 game to 1 lead over Aragua (best of 7 series).

20 minutes until Licey takes on Venezuela which will kick off the 2009 Serie del Caribe. I won't be watching because I'm in class but I'll try to follow on gameday.

Per the rosters on MILB.com, the only Nationals on the Licey World Series roster are Anderson Hernandez, Belliard, and Jorge Sosa. Flores and DCab have likely gone back to the states in order to get ready for Spring Training. A few ex-Nationals on the Licey WS roster include Ramon Ortiz, Felix Rodriguez, and D'Angelo Jimenez.

Licey should punish this Venezuelan team today.
