I'm failing to understand how signing Dunn to a 3/30 or a 2/20 type deal cripples this team so horribly. you guys are acting like we want to give Dunn 10 years, 200m.

but whatever. if you guys are confident that we're fine with the practically the same offense we had last season + Willingham, I'm willing to roll with it.

I could almost live with 2 years but anything beyond that would be a mistake.

I believe, barring injury (I freaking hate saying that), we should be improved offensively as currently configured. But that's no reason not to address a position of need when you have a shot at it. That's actually even more reason to add another power bat to make an even bigger leap. That may really improve our situation next offseason, providing the Lerners really want to spend money. Also, who's to say that we have to give Dunn a 4 year deal like some of the Dunn opponents are suggesting? We may be able to land him for a two year deal and even if we gave him 2/24, like JMad said, that shouldn't cripple this team at all.

I've been saying to trade NJ and or Milledge/Dukes if you think you get get value for it. Acquiring Adam Dunn for four years and lots of dough is going to hamper us a lot more than if we can get something for Johnson and Milledge or Dukes. I have never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever made either of those claims. I don't believe the Lerners are Cheap and I think they will do what they can to improve this team once they learn how baseball ownership works. They're still getting their feet wet.

that's what I'm saying. but these two are convinced without a shadow of a doubt that doing nothing to fill our biggest offensive need is a suitable course of action.

so I say go with it. should be less nagging in the gameday threads.

if Dunn isn't the answer, then what is?

what middle of the order bat should we get *this year* that is a better "answer" than Dunn?

I will qualify that, though, with the idea of liking the potential deal outlined from the blog hammondsnats posted where he might be had for a two year deal. I could live with that.

*any* player we sign has a risk of coming in here and sucking. any of them.

and any player we sign NEXT offseason has a risk of coming in here and sucking. including Holliday.

every player we draft has a risk of coming in here and sucking.

every player that puts on a Nationals Uniform has a risk of coming in here and sucking.

so the "if Dunn comes here and sucks" line of reasoning isn't quite as solid. because you can replace Dunns name with any player we'd sign or trade for.

Did you ever watch Dunn play? Against anyone other than the Nats? Or are you just looking at his HRs and BBs?

Dunn sucks, horrible player, terrible person we don't want him. that's fine.

do we address our need for a left-handed power hitter, and how?

who are we going to realistically trade Milledge or NJ for that fits the bill? fantasy trade time.

Why does it have to be a lefty? Why can't it be Ramirez? Because he's not left-handed?

Why not offer a trade with NJ, a pitching prospect and Milledge or Dukes? Why can't we package those together and come up with a better player than Dunn?

Of course not. What kind of dumb question is that?
Nick will be great for 2 weeks and then get injured. If we had someone in the minors I'd feel safe with giving him a fair shot, but we'll be stuck with no one.

who is REALISTICALLY going to give us a YOUNG, prime time power hitting first baseman that is a better power hitter than Adam Dunn for this package, *this* offseason(read: before spring training).

that's the criteria and the question.
