"We are disappointed we weren't able to sign him," Bowden wrote in an e-mail to the AP, "and will now turn our attention to several other opportunities to improve our major league club this offseason."

one can hope.  please, please don't take your ball and go home.  get us some of the other MAJOR LEAGUE players, and not just crappy retreads for our AAA club.

I wonder what JeffCMSB's "source" thinks about this?

I could be wrong, but I actually think they may have been on to something. There was no indication that the Yankees were even a factor until very late in the game. It's very possible that Jeff's source said what he said, believing it 100% at the time. The Yankees' last-second swoop-in caught a lot of people by surprise.

Hey we got Corey Patterson and Sosa, seems like they want to win.. I just think those two pick ups were to soon after the signing lol.

We better announce what were going to do like in the next hour. They need to act fast. I want to know they are seriously frustrated :(

I'm going to cry myself to sleep.

Now, the team returns to lower-profile endeavors. Just because the Nationals lost out on Teixeira doesn't mean the team will rush out to spend those same dollars elsewhere. Perhaps they will explore Adam Dunn as an alternative, but even that is still a part of internal debate. The Nationals have long preached about their plan for building an eventual championship team -- a plan that includes acquiring young players or players just entering their primes. One team source said that the money offered to Teixeira shouldn't be interpreted as a coffer for further offseason spending. At the Winter Meetings, the team said it was not interested in outfielder Manny Ramirez, another Scott Boras client.

Quote

According to sources, the Nationals final offer -- between $178 and $184 million, depending on the report -- was not the deciding factor for Teixeira. He simply preferred a team that could win immediately.
Washington spoke to Teixeira about the potential in baseball for a quick turnaround -- the Rockies and Rays had done it, after all. Plus, the Nationals have two top-10 picks in the upcoming 2009 draft. Bowden offered the pitch that the Nationals, within two or three years, could develop into a contender. The team's final contract included an out clause for Teixeira after the fourth year

The offer could not have been better, and only Robert Olney wants us to sign Manny. Things at least make sense.

so basically the Nats said "give us 3 years and if we aren't contenders by then, you can leave".

that's reasonable.

I maintain that the Nats made a more-than-competitive offer.

This can be said about a lot of people.

That's to divert our attention from reality and make us believe we're really trying!

I'm going to cry myself to sleep.

I know you've worked yourself into a frenzy but dude, it's not the end of the world. It's really not that bad.

But the quote says the opt out would not come until after season 4.

How could he have known unless he had a Yankees source, which he never claimed.

A lot of people said and believed 100% that we were going to get him. "Sources" that say "this is going to happen" should no longer be considered sources if "this" doesn't happen. I 100% believe that Jeff dude was just trying to promote his blog.

this was my initial thoughts as well, though I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

i don't think we'll see him very often from here on out.

No its not, it just sucks to know the team, not in this for the longest time, comes in the last few days and steals him, after signing two big free agents before. Thank GOD were not in the AL to face them. I'm just angry that were either going to see this same exact team next season as of now, unless something incredible happens and we can get Adrian Gonzalez, he would be my second choice hands down.

Meh, I'm going to get a Patterson Jersey!

It comes down to the reality that he did not want to play for a losing team. Neither the Nats or the birds had any chance to land him. He knew he'd get paid regardless but he wanted to get paid and win. Some people (not 'insiders') have been saying that we were not a realistic destination. Surely our FO was aware of this as well. Somebody please pass the snakeoil.

Nope. He's a goner. He was going out on a limb hoping to be right but it backfired.

I meant he may have had a Nats source who was being told all the right things by Boras & Co. at the time, only to be blindsided by the Yanks. But I conceded ronnynat's point above on this.

I could have said I had a source too.
I hope people didn't take what he said seriously. I sure didn't.

I could be wrong but I believe he left himself some wiggle room and said 99%.

Again, they didn't "steal" anything from us. However, they should feel free to steal some of the garbage we have on our roster.  :?

thunderstruck would be proud of you.

QFT. We never had a chance in Tex and Boras' mind.

Maybe people will want to play here in a few years.

Oh, they did. And if we had gotten Tex, ridiculously people would have given that guy and his blog a lot of the credit for "knowing" so far in advance.

I just noticed that the second pic of the snakeoil salesman has a sign that reads "good for man & beast" so Dukes can digest some of it too if he needs it.
