It's hilarious to hear some of you wanting to jump off the ledge over this. And none of you are really going to give up on baseball. They can't buy a title. It has to be won on the diamond. They are just doing everything in their power to help their chances. I see nothing wrong with that and I wouldn't mind it if our team did the same thing. Winning is what it's all about and we should be outdoing ourselves to ensure we improve our chances.
There's no even playing field. The Yankees and Red Sox are head and shoulders above the rest of the teams because of their payroll.

If the Nationals didn't exist I would watch no baseball. I'd rather watch hockey.

Tex is no A-Rod. He's a piece of crap. I hope he's god awful. I hope he his .175 and makes 400 errors. Good thing our team doesn't have this anvil around our neck. He's a loser.

Is this a joke?

you are full of crap.  you wouldn't be saying this if he had chosen us.

let's not have sour grapes about this.

I said from the beginning I preferred Dunn due to the contract. I was warming to Tex when the signing looked likely, but the guy never was, never will be A-Rod. A-Rod is a Babe Ruth type. I'm still glad it didn't get done, and I do hope that Tex is a colossal failure.

How is this a joke. I always said 10/$200 was too much. 8/180 is too much. I was gonna roll with it if we signed him.

well at any rate, there is no point in getting upset about this.

the Lerners did exactly what they were supposed to do. They made a more-than-competitive offer, and they had significant negotiation with Tex.  in the end, he chose to play for the All-Star team, rather than the All-Rookie team.

all we can do now is focus on other options.  I hope we can make an offer to Dunn as soon as humanly possible.

If the Nationals didn't exist I would watch no baseball. I'd rather watch hockey.

If that were the case they would win the WS every year and they don't. Teams have options to spend money, some more than others of course, but some refuse to do it and they reap what they sow. If I thought baseball was really so unfair I wouldn't watch but I don't believe that to be the case.

I'm seeing 8 yr/'more than 170 million' on ESPN.  Where did you guys read/hear 8yr/180?

From what i am reading, we still had a better offer.  Doesn't really matter at this point...but

It's better for the players union - they care about  the per year value.

Clearly the Lerners really tried hard on this one, and it's a shame that the evil empire could just come along and buy Tex like a candy bar.

I wonder how they'll respond to this, since they put so much into the effort. Will it make them gun-shy to get involved in a major free agent splash in the future? Or will it make them more determined? Since Tex is a guy they really saw as the next face of the franchise, this has got to hurt.

The sweetest possible outcome for '09 would be for the Rays to win the AL East and for the AL Wild Card to come from one of the other divisions.

Props to the Lerners. I'm proud of the effort. Please don't get discouraged by this.

Dunn and Hudson are not the answers. Despite not getting Tex we shouldn't go crazy and shell out money for these guys. Yes, they need to spend some money but it's not wise at all to just throw money on players just because they are available. It has to be the right player.
