:stupid:
I'm stuck in my bed with the two-week flu, and have nothing better to do than go stir-crazy waiting for Tex to sign. :(

Their Teixeira Watch thread finally fulfills my years-old dream of finding a web page that gives me new entertainments and amusements every single time I hit the refresh button.

We need to add a power bat, but once this happens, our team's primary focus needs to be the rotation for the future.

This year is going to tell a lot about that.  We'll have a better idea as to the viability of Balester, Martis, Zimmermann, and Detwiler.  I hope that if we don't get a quality pitcher this offseason, we'll do something in the near future to set us up there.

Well, if nothing changes, Strasburg will likely be the clear choice for the number 1 draft pick and is viewed as having the potential to make the big club by the season's end. And he will not come cheap. If one assumes that is the plan, then the inking of Strasburg is in the same realm as a lower tier FA arm as it will show up on the balance sheet in the same way.

They've all gone to their respective planes, so we're going to have a lull in news for a while.  Good thing, whew, I need to do some work and gather my strength, it's going to be a long weekend coming up.

Gammons Alert!

He was just on Outside The Lines - only talked Teix for about a minute or so - and he said there's a very strong possibility that the Nats end up getting here.  He said it's probably going to come down to whether he wants to be an instant contender (Red Sox) or if he likes the money and wants to be the face of the franchise (Nats).

Buckle up, it's gonna be a shaky ride.

With Teixeira, serious improvement by Milledge and Zimmerman, and a lot of good luck, we can be competitive next year. But the odds are not good that even 2 of those 3 things will happen.
Serious improvement from Zim?  When he's been healthy (which by the way, last year was really the only time he wasn't healthy) he's been very good and improved every year.  Also consider, he's never really had any productive help in that lineup.  If/when he gets that, he'll be as good as anyone.  If you combine him and Tex on that infield, it will be the best set of corners in baseball.  But I agree about Milledge, it would be nice to see significant improvement from him.  But I think adding Tex to the lineup helps everyone else in the lineup.

I think Milledge can become an everyday solid hitter. He has shown signs of it last year when hed go on some hot streaks but he needs to find that every day.

Zimmerman needs to ditch that early season slump he has every year. That is absolutely killer when you're trying to find your place in the standings and your "star" player has his head up his ass.

Thank you.  He also happens to be what our youngest position player who led the team in homers/rbis/stolen bases.  As DPM alluded to, adding Teixeira would help everyone in our line-up improve.  With Teix and Willingham, I wouldn't be surprise to see Zim go 25-30/100, Dukes 20-25/85, Milledge 20/80 and then Flores and Willingham are bashers as well.

Warning: Teixeira generally starts off slow too.  Look @ his numbers in the past.  But he always comes through strong.

Speaking of which, is Zimmerman going to play in the WBC? That COULD help him get ready for opening day.

THat's not as effective as spring training is in preparing a player.

Ken Rosenthal says we're also interested in Raul Ibanez in case we don't land Teixeira.

That still is no excuse for Zimmerman.

And if that is true, this team is always going to be battling uphill.
