We need to add a power bat, but once this happens, our team's primary focus needs to be the rotation for the future.

This year is going to tell a lot about that.  We'll have a better idea as to the viability of Balester, Martis, Zimmermann, and Detwiler.  I hope that if we don't get a quality pitcher this offseason, we'll do something in the near future to set us up there.

These morons from OH do not know what the freak they are talking about.

Way more delusional than most here.

This "insider info" and these couple of board members having it on an "hourly basis" reminds me of the Caps board a few years ago when there was that garbage cliche a few members created. I think they called it "The Board" or something. I remember that whole nonsense turned me off from that board.

agreed.  i'm not too crazy about the starting pitchers on the FA/trade market right now.  Burnett is going to make much more than any of us thought, Padres are asking for the sky for Peavy (which i understand) and I doubt a Derek Lowe would come here (although I would take him for two-three years).

Do you mean "clique" instead of "cliche"?

The OH guys make an interesting point: There's really almost no discussion going on over at the big Red Sox forum, Sons of Sam Horn. In fact, nobody's posted in their Tex thread for an hour and a half.

The big fish probably got away, however. The word around the Bellagio Hotel is that the O's offer is well behind the other contenders in the Mark Teixeira derby, though MacPhail was not conceding anything.

1:39 p.m. — Boras: Teixeira still in play

Scott Boras, walking briskly through the lobby of the Bellagio, said the Mark Teixeira sweepstakes remains wide open.

Asked if Teixeira was down to deciding between the Red Sox and Nationals, Boras said, "That would be totally inaccurate," adding that other teams were in the mix.

The question is say we sign Tex and win this bidding war, does the free agent spending stop there? Or do you think that we will have made a commitment to winning and will be forced to add a SP or two?

I think it still has to be baby steps.  This team has enough holes and the only pockets deep enough to plug every hole on a roster is in The Bronx.  If we had the revenue sources of hte Red Sox I still don't think we could fix al that ails us in one off-season.  The nice thing about a proven commodity like Teixiera is taht he makes your entire lineup and infield defense instantaneously better.

Incidentally, Scott Miller of CBSSports.com is hearing that the Nats are second on the list behind only the Red Sox and that the parameters of our contract may actually be more appealing to Tex.  Tex will have to decide if he wants to win in 2009 or whether he wants to help build a perennial contender.  Per "The Baseball Beat" with Charlie Steiner on XM-175.

Also, Miller announced Peavy to the Cubs is deader than dead.

Yeah that's a bit shocking as they have been trying to work out a deal for over a month now.  The Cubs rotation would've been sick with Peavy included.

From the Hot Stove:

Quote
In his final media session of the Winter Meetings, Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein indicated that he was not close to any moves.

Yes, the Red Sox remain heavy players for free agent Mark Teixeira, though Epstein won't publicly acknowledge that quest because of team policy. But the Angels, Nationals and Orioles also remain in it and there's nothing that says another team won't jump in to the sweepstakes at some point. The only known offer thus far is an eight-year, $160 million proposal from the Nationals. Teixeira could receive anywhere from eight to 10 seasons at an annual value that figures to be a minimum of $20 million per season.

Epstein confirmed that the Red Sox made offers to three free agents at the Winter Meetings.

Their Teixeira Watch thread finally fulfills my years-old dream of finding a web page that gives me new entertainments and amusements every single time I hit the refresh button.

One of their "insiders" claims the O's are "still very much involved," while the other claims they are totally out. Am I sick for having so much fun watching this?

If he comes to DC, we'll hook him up with the chick in MrMadison's avatar. I think she's only about 70 now. She'll probably welcome the attention from a younger man.

It's Alex Rodriguez that's into cougars.

Well, one guy suggested that if Tex signs with the Red Sox, they should still cheer for him, and I think everyone else is planning on eating his kids.

The guy who posted that has "40-Year-Old Virgin" as his avatar. Ironic, is it not?
