The Washington Nationals tomorrow are expected to recall outfielder Roger Bernadina and first baseman/outfielder Kory Casto from Columbus of the Triple-A International League, and recall from rehab and reinstate shortstop Alberto Gonzalez from the 15-Day Disabled List.  The Nationals are also expected to select the contracts of left-handed pitcher Mike Hinckley, right-handed pitcher Shairon Martis and right-handed pitcher Levale Speigner from Columbus.  Nationals Senior Vice President and General Manager Jim Bowden made the announcement.

Honestly, and I can't believe I am saying thing, bring up Everts too. These callups are a sieve - lets see who has substance. Best buds Bernadina and Martis may just drive each other.

Everts is a bum. He's had a garbage season in High-A ball.

No big surprises here.  I am looking forward to seeing what Martis can do.

Dammit, we need to see if Martis can be good as a starter.

Maybe he'll get some mop up time in a blowout

Why does a team like Boston call up a young stud pitcher like Michael Bowden every year, but the crappier teams like the Nats won't call up guys like Zimmermann? I know Zimmermann's nearing his pitch limit on the season, but still.

Boston needs a final push to give their guys a break on the way to the playoffs. We need to separate the wheat from the chaff and reward guys like Bernadina. Different motivation.  Zimmermann will get a Lannan style shot at things I hope.

The issue most times is a matter of controlling a contract. Jordan Zimmermann does not need to be added to the 40-man roster per CBA rules until after the 2010 season. While he will likely be added prior to that date, there is little reason to add him to the 40-man earlier than they need to. Why make a move when you don't have to make a move? Unless the Nationals believe Zimmermann is going to be a part of the team from the start of 2009, there is not a reason to make the move.

I thought that was the plan? Giving him a chance now just to see how he handles MLB pitching sounds like a great idea to me.

So what impact will it have on his situation if JZ is added to the 40 man roster say next May or June? Because I can see him being here at some point next season, although not to begin the season.

I do not believe he is a consideration for the start of the season. I envision him following a path similar to what Collin Balester did this season

That's fair I guess although I think they should let him compete for a spot in ST.

If he comes up for the season in June, he does not use an option.

Additionally, from a bookkeeping POV, he does not accrue the 30 something days of service time in September of 2008. That might seem like a minor thing, but teams watch that sort of thing. By minimizing the number of days of service time, they can keep a player from reaching arbitration "too soon."

It's the business aspect of MLB that really can be tedious. If you take a look back at when Jon Rauch was added to the roster in 2005, it conveniently enough kept him from reaching arbitration eligibility

So you think he'll start the season with Columbus? My hope is that he whoops in ST, and then earns a spot from the get-go. Balester could have earned a spot, but he obviously had more work to do.

Not saying they won't. In fact I'd almost guarantee he is a non-roster invitee in 2009. If he puts up the numbers, he can earn the shot, but I'd imagine it would have to be eye-popping combined with the favorites stinking up the joint.

Then we have our answer, barring an unexpected acceleration in his development. I'm cool with that.

Could be Columbus. Could be Harrisburg again. I think a big part might be which pitching coach the Nationals think fits better with Zimmermann. He is going to face older players in Triple-A and younger but often times more talented players in Double-A.

Hey Brian, if you were to guess, who do you think will be our top 10 prospects going into next season?

Completely off the top of my head

Zimmermann
Marrero
Burgess
Detwiler
Martis
Smiley
Willems
McGeary
Espinosa
Hood

The order is still fluid. And I could see some other guys as considerations
