Tim Dierkes has an interesting thought
« on: August 28, 2008, 05:43:44 pm »
Over on MLBTradeRumors:

Quote
Jayson Stark says friends of Tom Glavine and John Smoltz indicate they both want another go at it in '09.  They're hoping the Braves will offer low-base incentivized deals.  If the Braves spurn Glavine, I wonder if he'll sign with the Nationals.

A couple days ago Dierkes said A.J. Burnett will look into Baltimore and D.C. if he opts out of his contract, because he lives around there.

I can't imagine any of those things actually happening, but it would be cool.

No it wouldn't. Glavine cannot pitch any more. He's washed up.

Oh I know. I remember vividly of him absolutely choking like a dog down the stretch last year for the Mets. He was awful this year too (5.54 ERA) before getting hurt. His days are numbered. If we wanted a left-handed nibbler like him in our rotation, Perez would be a better and cheaper option. If it were up to me neither would be in the mix.

We can't even as much as entertain the idea of signing a dinosaur like Glavine.

Even at league minimum,we couldn't afford his ben-gay bill.

I was mostly referring to Burnett with my remark, not sure why you guys assumed I meant Glavine.

I don't really want to deal with four years of paying Burnett the $12-15 million someone's gonna give him.

This is his worst season so far, but he's still been pretty solid. I'd take him, but probably not for that much.

I guess they were looking at his record.

Regardless, all three of these suggestions get thumbs down.

Why would anyone renew their season tickets? I cannot answer that but probably will anyway.

I thought A.J. Burnett lived in Monkton,MD. Same town Peter Angelos lives in.

Here is a somewhat more interesting thought from Dierkes: the Yankees may be willing to deal Ian Kennedy and/or Phil Hughes for "a young center fielder or first baseman" this offseason. Can we dump Nick Johnson?

There's so much that we could do, but who knows what we will do. We could still pull off a trade before the deadline tonight.
