Remarkably, though, in Washington, D.C. -- the city of statues -- as far as I know, there are no statues honoring sports figures in the District. That will change dramatically next year. Three statues of Washington baseball legends -- Walter Johnson of the Senators past, Josh Gibson of the Negro League Homestead Grays who played at Griffith Stadium, and Frank Howard of the second Senators incarnation -- will have statues outside Nationals Park, and those are scheduled to be unveiled next year.
....but it doesn't really make sense to me to have three non-Nat statues.
Yeah we should have enshrined Jason Simontacchi.
One of the American League's eight charter franchises, the club was founded in Washington, D.C. in 1901 as the Washington Senators. That was a carryover nickname from a previous, unrelated club in the National League. In 1905 the team changed its official name to the Washington Nationals.
I'm OK with this, but it doesn't really make sense to me to have three non-Nat statues.
Walter Johnson was a National.
****, they couldn't of picked three better men, IMO.
How are Walter Johnson and Frank Howard not Nats? Walter Johnson played in a time when the Washington baseball team was officially named the Naionals. Frank Howard played for the Senators but the Washington baseball team was always referred to as the Nats in the Washington area.
This. Do we need to wait 100 years and then have a statue of someone form the DSL or GCL Nats to finally reach the majors and then succeed?
I meant they weren't Expos/Nats. It basically becomes a Washington baseball historical memorial when you do that. Again, not a problem. Just not something that completely makes sense to me.
I see what you mean, but my question is: Do we really need statues at all?
crap, they couldn't of picked three better men, IMO.
Its just acknowledging and honoring the fact that the city has 100 plus years of baseball tradition as opposed to 5 years
I think that's the idea. We need to completely disassociate ourselves from the Expos. The Expos are a thing of the past.
I have to disagree... I mean, this was their team before we got it. We should feature some of the Expos' best players somewhere, like Andre Dawson and Gary Carter.
Do we really need statues at all?
I would rather tie this team to the old Nationals, the Senators, and the Greys.
It may have been their team before but it isn't their team now. The Nationals should not be treated as a 2 city team. And while those players were great, they were Expos and they have nothing to do with the current team that plays in this city.
