Free Agents

What free agents do you guys think we could realistically sign, and would we have to break the bank for them? How much? Would they want to play for us?

Just curious what you guys think...

anybody that would make a difference will require breaking the bank (and losing draft picks)

I hope that Jim Bowden (should he be GM) should go out and get a crapload of VETERANS who know how to act and lead the team through tough times. We could use a 10 year veteran starting pitcher with a quality reputation. We could use a positive role model for guys like Milledge and Dukes...but also guys like Lannan and Flores. Dmitri is a great guy by all accounts but he cannot do it alone. Why not go after some quality clubhouse guys and replace scrubs like macowiak and estrada and lo duca with real quality personalities

No...we need to stack-up on youth players who will be with us in 4 years and still be in their prime.

We need people to guide and teach them to become quality players not quality talents

Greg Maddux would be a cool addition, but he won't come here. Other than that, I'm fine if the only veterans we sign are for the middle infield spots.

A lot of the time, prospects work best if they have someone better than them who is a veteran starting so they have to kinda earn the job, and at the same time they gain experience and mentorship while not under immediate pressure to help the team win.

Some of these guys' contracts include 2009 options (*).

Pitchers - Burnett, Sheets, Garland (if we're desperate), Lackey*, Oliver Perez, Harden*

Position Players - Furcal, Hudson, Dunn, Teixeira, Chipper* (:D), Abreu, Crawford*, Ibanez, Vlad*

Care to hazard a guess on what it would take to sign any of these players?

Vlad and Chipper will be around $20M/year each, but I thought I'd just mention 'em for the hell of it.

Dunn will be around $16M. That's the bat I'd like us to get.

Well, my top 4 off that list would be Crawford, Furcal, Harden and Sheets.  Burnett wouldn't be a bad option either.  I'd love to have Crawford, I'm sure Tampa will pick up that option though, he really makes that offense of theirs go.

20 million for Guerrero? He'll be and old 33 next season.   ;)

I must have erased his name on accident. He's definitely one of the better ones. He'll probably be the highest paid of the bunch. NY or Boston? :?

I guess it depends on which team signs him. He is "only" getting paid $14.5M this season, so it might be less. NY or Boston would pay him around $20M, though. I could see him going to Boston.

I would be inclined to say that ANY HITTER that can hit over .300

Bowden constantly promoted our minor league farm system PITCHERS never has he highlighted a hitter.

I think

Chipper will retire a Brave
Crawford has two more years at the club option ( I agree with Omaha I'd love Crawford)
Vlad,Lackey & Harden (even the A's can afford $7M) aren't going anywhere

Dunn - 8 years $160M (That career .900+ OBS goes a long way when Soriano sign for 7/138 two years ago)
Furcal - 5 years $75M ( Currently on a 3/39 and he'd be the best SS in the AL)
O. Hudson - I have no idea- how much are three gold gloves worth? Luis Castillo (3 GG's) signed a 4/25 to stay with the Mets. I think he'll stay in the desert ( The D'Backs gave Byrnes a 3/30 last year so a  4/30 wouldn't be out of line)
Tex - You don't hear anything from his agent or from the Braves. I'd look for the Braves to resign him at the 8/160 level. (Again the .900+ career OBS)
Abreu - Will be 35 before nest season. He'll be coming off a 6/80 and doesn't have a ring. I think he'll get a short term deal from the Yankees.
Ibanez- Turned 36 yesterday. Happy Birthday Raul!

Garland - He's tall. We seemed to get guys off the scrap heap that throw just as well.
Burnett - I can't see AJ opting out of $22M for '09 & '10. Not too many teams looking for a 32 year old headcase at that salary.

Sheets & Sabathia - Clearly the class. I have no idea anymore. Not 6 months after Zito, Buehrle signs for 4/56. But I don't think either will move for less than $100M.

Tex will probably end up an Oriole. He's said for a while now that's where he wants to go.

One thing is for sure - we cant go and get anyone with any sort of injury issue because you just know if he was wearing a curly W hat...he'd surely make the DL (Sheets is out)

I'd take O-Dog from AZ after the series he had in a heart beat and probably wouldnt be that expensive.
I'd pass on ANY FORMER OR CURRENT REDS PLAYER (Dunn is out)  except Aaron Harang and Jay Bruce

Sabathia would be nice!

I've heard fans say that but I don't remember ever hearing it come from Tex or his agents. Remember Tex has chosen Atlanta once already & his wife is from the area.

The thing to keep in mind is "Why would  (fill in player name) want to play for the Nats?"

Quote
First and foremost, Mark Teixeira tried to emphasize that he is focused on his current situation. "I'm a Texas Ranger," he said. But Teixeira, who grew up in Severna Park, also reiterated Friday what he's said before: He would strongly consider playing for the Orioles.

"Baltimore, in the future, it's a place I'd love to look at," Teixeira said. "I don't want to talk too much about it. I don't want anything to be a distraction to my team. In a year and a half, we can have a lot of fun conversations."

...

"I root for those guys, and I root for the Orioles -- except when they're playing us," Teixeira said. "My dad, when he's not watching the Rangers games, he's watching the O's games."

It wasn't really his choice to go to Atlanta. It was just the deal that worked at the time.

I wonder if he still feels the same. Atlanta is a great place for MLB players. They're in the hunt every year without all the BS of Bahsten & N'ywork.
