A 2nd rounder?  That's great!  I was worried we'd end up giving up a first rounder.

Late update, the trade also includes a 6th rounder in 2010.

We gave up too much. taylor will be in D.C. for at most three seasons, and theres a reason other teams in the league didn't want to do this trade.

Still, it could be the piece thats been needed on the D-line for a while.

Too much = a 2nd rounder?

A 2nd round pick really isn't THAT valuable.  There's not that great of a chance that one will turn into a perennial Pro-Bowler or something.

Good one saltydad.   I wish that broad wold get traded somewhere far away so we wouldn't have to put up with her anymore.

A. Theres still the fact that, as i said earlier. no other teams even listened to offers if it required giving up a round 2 pick. There is definitely a reason for that.

B. A lot more good players come out of the second round than you think. Players like:

Osi Umenyiora
Demeco Ryans
Marcus McNeil
Roman Harper
Tony Scheffler
Maurice Jones-Drew
Devin Hester
Lofa Tatupu
Karlos Dansby
Bob Sanders
Michael Boulware
Madieu Williams
Antwan Odom
Charles Tillman
Rasheam Mathis
E.J. Henderson
Anquan Boldin
Mike Doss
Andre Gurode
Clinton Portis
Deion Branch
Drew Brees
Kyle Vanden Bosch
Chad Johnson
Fred Smoot
Aaron Schobel
Matt Light
Chris Chambers
Shaun Rogers
Ian Gold
Jerry Porter
Marcus Washington
Dre Bly
Flozell Adams
Patrick Surtain
Samari Rolle

And that's dating from 1998.

Some of these may be argued as notable, but i listed them anyway.

In the first round of the '04 draft, 20 of 31 players drafted panned out. in the 2nd round of that draft, 10 of 31 reached at least near the same level as many of the 1st rounders.

In the '03 draft, 16 of 31 first rounders panned out. in the second round, 12 did very notable jobs as well.

My point is, second rounders are not chump change by any means.

*Years '03 and '04 were used because players are proven.

Redskins finally make Sportscenter - all they needed to do was trade for a guy who dances on tv.

2nd rounders should turn into starters but they seldom are Jason Taylor type players in their first 2 or 3 years in the league. Also, you can do the same thing about other rounds in the draft over the last 10 years. Of course it's difficult to reason with a Redskins fan whose screen name honors a division rival's QB.  :?

Steelers?  I haven't heard much of them.

Plenty of Cowboys talk to go around, though.

Saw a feature interview with Roethlisberger about the draft, etc. Maybe it was FSN Pittsburgh, thought it was on ESPN.

You raise a point, but over the long term a second rounder is more useful than Taylor.

And before you go pointing that finger about honoring a rival QB, you should probably take into account that that is my name.

Did the Saints get ripped off, or what?!? they gave up a second and fifth rounder this year for Jeremy Shockey, a tight end.

  I asked you before and you told me he was your favorite QB.

It depends on who the second rounder is.  You conveniently leave off the names of all of the second round busts/worthless players in the last however many years.

The Saints.

we agree on that.

i can see, although i disagree slightly, how a 2nd rounder this year and 6th rounder next year add up to a perennial pro-bowl DE. But this year 2nd and 5th round picks for a TE, and an oft-injured one at that, with a big ego? how did the Giants get away with this?

It depends on who the second rounder is.  You conveniently leave off the names of all of the second round busts/worthless players in the last however many years.

I also "conveniently" left off the names of 1st round busts. my purpose here was not to prove that second rounders are perfect and superior to first rounders. My purpose is saying that second rounders have a lot of value as well as first ronders, and keeping our first rounder isn't a ton better than a secnd rounder.

Not a ton, but I think first rounders are generally a safer bet than second rounders.

But a draft pick in general is no sure thing, so it's not like we definitely gave up something that'll be more valuable than 1-3 years of Jason Taylor.

Naturally they're safer.

It's disputable. It'll all come down to how he plays. There is defintely a huge chance he does really well. He played very well with Miami over the last few years, with no supporting cast in a 3-4. Now, he will have Andre Carter opposite him in a 4-3. All signs point to one or both of Taylor and/or Carter to have a huge year.
