7 Innings of 1 hit ball - maybe we should hold on to this Redding guy

I only saw the box score, but holy crap!

And me <g>

Actually, I didn't think there was that many people who didn't like Redding. Nevertheless, the stat line wasn't out of line with reality. He had great stuff tonight. You have to get a little lucky and have good defense to hold a team down like that. But he looked pretty commanding.

Some people on this board refused to admit that he was our best pitcher after the break last year - and prefer Chico, Balester, even Bacsik

So is this game going to suddenly become the "Jason Bergmann and That Atlanta Game" game for Tim Redding?

I'm as excited as the rest of us, but lets see Redding and the like string together some solid start to start performances before we start going down on them.

Great performance tonight, though. Top notch.

Good for Redding, lets hope he can do this for us over the long haul. For the record, I was never a "Redding Hater" cause I thought he was a good, if not better, than most of the other guys we could throw out there.

i never doubted redding. i'd be lying though if i said tonights dominating display of pitching didn't surprise me. it's pretty cool that he's from rochester, just a little over an hour from buffalo.

and for the record, i think berg is currently our best active pitcher.

Ah yes, the Chico hate continues. Just group him with Bacsik and Balester.

Please.

Redding had 15 starts with a 3.64 ERA last year. That seems like a pretty good string

I suspect he will give up a run or two over the course of the season, but he sure dominated a great hitting team, in a bandbox, tonight.  He clearly tired in the 8th, but he's still building endurance (like all the guys are).

Chico never ever had front-of-the-rotation potential. He's not that kind of pitcher. He's a nice, valuable innings eater. His start yesterday was pretty typical, I think.

Redding was a better prospect than Oswalt at one point.

Chico isnt even an inning eater. It feels like dude rarely goes 6 innings.

I'll grant you its just one game but I'm thinking Redding will be a pleasant surprise player this year.

My pick is Tim Redding.

Arguing against him:
o   He did not win any of his last six starts.
o   He’s a journeyman.
o   I am not a stats fanatic but his career numbers make last year look like a fluke to me.
o   He’s not on the "A" list as of spring training. He’ll have to earn a spot and likely won’t get it till others are hurt or falter.

Arguing for him as a surprise:
o   He is obscure. Aside from fans the general reaction is "Who?".
o   He had 8 quality starts in 15 appearances.
o   Our pitching coach rehabs more pitchers than catholic charities rehabilitates junkies.

LOL, he had 4 negatives vs. 3 positives, doesn't sound like he merited a thread title mention to me.

I was really hot on Redding last Spring...I was predicting him to be a really great starter.  I looked silly when he flopped instead.  He looked great last night, but it's just one game.  Keep your fingers crossed!

You can change the thread title if you want, moderator :)

I remembered you had picked him as the surprise of the season, and I wanted to sign him to a deal when he was solid last season.

I just have this feeling that he's only now really figured it out, how to use his considerable ability.  As everyone saw yesterday, he's got some really good stuff, and when he uses it, he's tough to hit.

No, I don't expect this every time out, of course.  But I could see Tim making it close to 200 innings and having an era under 3.50, which would be stellar.

From today's game notes:

the one-hitter was the Nationals’ first since MLB returned to DC in 2005

Whoa, whoa, whoa.  I realize I was only postin' on the other board last year, but I was the one saying out of Spring Training '07 that Redding had the chance to be an anchor for this rotation for years to come.  I was accused (and rightly so) of having a man-crush on Tim Redding and a couple of trolls (Binglebop and another guy who somehow copied my nickname) went around claiming that I said Tim Redding was Cy Young material.

Now, while I never stated he was a Cy Young candidate I did say that he had a chance to be something special for us - and this was last year.  I thought Redding pitched really well for us after the Break last year and I think this is a continuation of his recovery.  He is now two full years removed from surgery which, typically speaking, is the time you see the full recovery.  He was the Astros top rated pitching prospect before his injury and at 30 he's still in the upswing stages of a pitcher's typical career.  He was constantly over 90 MPH last night and hit 93 a few times.  If he continues to build stamina and can locate that curve ball we're talking a solid #2 starter with ace potential.

Go ahead.  Call me crazy.  Tell me I'm jumping the gun.  I want you to.

I've watched this guy since he pitched for the Astros and he's got it.  The Saint will help him put it all together.

The other board (and it's idiot trolls) hurt my eyes, so I stick mostly to this one. I'll take your word though :)

It's all good. I think you guys got there first so kudos. :)

Hopefully he continues to perform as we expect or :-[ but I still expect him to be the surprise this year.

According to your logic, he had a good outing.  4 IP 1ER, thats all you gotta look at right?  Or do you only use runs, earned or not?

disclaimer: i did not see the game
