What is NOT outdated iin that piece? It's condescending trash, and no wonder women burned bras, etc. "Remember, his topics of conversation are more important than yours." Maked me glad I was only a kid in the 50's.
Hey, that was one of my favorites. I was planning on saying, "Shutup about World Peace. We're talking baseball at this table! Oh, and by the way, I'm the master and you cannot question me!"
Our one neighbor has the exact same floor plan as us. Our houses have a decent-sized hallway closet, about 10 feet wide with double folding doors. Before we moved everything in, I built ours out as a sports closet, with custom racks for all our golf bags, baseball equipment, tennis equipment, etc. Shortly after we moved in, Charlie and Sandy come by for a visit. I show him how I customized the closet, and he says, "That's Sandy's closet." We asked him what he was talking about, and he said, "Master bedroom, master's closet. All Sandy's things are in the hallway closet."
- She's not allowed to answer the phone
- Only his name is on the answering machine
- He's belonged to the country club since 1973. When Emily had her first communion in 1997, we had a reception at the club. It was Sandy's first time to ever set foot in there.
- He is an engineer (literally a rocket scientist and was the lead engineer at the IBM facility in Boca) and a gear-head. They took their first ever vacation a couple years ago - to a NASCAR driving school. She had to stay in the hotel room all while he was at the school
- Until he retired from IBM/AirForce Reserves, she would come out in the mornings and wipe the dew off his windshield
- He was astonished that I "let" Sally have a mind of her own. We have had some extremely weird conversations on the golf course over the years
But, they are quite happy with the 1950's lifestyle, and it works well for them. I couldn't take it.
Sally is very strong willed, and I have no concerns that if anything should happen to me that she could handle things. At 45, she started back to college (she had an AA, but completely changed career paths), is now a professor at FAU, and already co-authored a book. Our lives are somewhat unconventional, especially by 1955 standards. I stay at home, and she goes out to work. I do virtually all the cooking, dishes, and most of the laundry. She comes home to me, and I get her a glass of wine.
