What is NOT outdated iin that piece? It's condescending trash, and no wonder women burned bras, etc. "Remember, his topics of conversation are more important than yours." Maked me glad I was only a kid in the 50's.

Making yourself look nice before he gets home is a good one.

Picking up the clutter before he walks in the door is another.

Listen to him (not that his topics are more important than mine, but give him time to talk before barraging him w/ home stuff).

Make the home a place of peace and order.

That stuff is good counsel.  Many people have told me to do that for Dan.   A lot of the rest is garbage:
You have no right to question him.
Prepare a fire.
Fluff his pillow and take off his shoes.
His judgement/opinion/topics of conversation are more important and better...
That's the sheer BS that created that bra burning era.

But we don't need to throw the baby out w/ the bath water.  There are a few sound nuggets in there. But they did leave something out!  Don't tell him about the new credit card bill.  :icon_mrgreen:

Congratulations, Evolution!

That's not always how it happens.  Actually, I honest to G*d don't remember proposing.  I have no recollection of it whatsoever.  Sally says I proposed one my parent's porch swing.  My recollection of how things came about is that Sally went to Kay Jewelers in Pentagon City Mall, bought herself a ring, and handed me a payment book.  This was just a few days before we made the final move to Florida.  We got married about three months later, on New Year's Eve, because she found a cruise that was leaving port on January 1.  Of course, she found the cruise only a week or so before it left.  Due to a lack of planning, the wedding was at one of those Las Vegas style chapels in Ft. Lauderdale.

Isn't there a drive through wedding chapel in the suburbs?

Hey, that was one of my favorites.  I was planning on saying, "Shutup about World Peace.  We're talking baseball at this table!  Oh, and by the way, I'm the master and you cannot question me!"

Our one neighbor has the exact same floor plan as us.  Our houses have a decent-sized hallway closet, about 10 feet wide with double folding doors.  Before we moved everything in, I built ours out as a sports closet, with custom racks for all our golf bags, baseball equipment, tennis equipment, etc.  Shortly after we moved in, Charlie and Sandy come by for a visit.  I show him how I customized the closet, and he says, "That's Sandy's closet."  We asked him what he was talking about, and he said, "Master bedroom, master's closet.  All Sandy's things are in the hallway closet."

- She's not allowed to answer the phone
- Only his name is on the answering machine
- He's belonged to the country club since 1973.  When Emily had her first communion in 1997, we had a reception at the club.  It was Sandy's first time to ever set foot in there.
- He is an engineer (literally a rocket scientist and was the lead engineer at the IBM facility in Boca) and a gear-head.  They took their first ever vacation a couple years ago - to a NASCAR driving school.  She had to stay in the hotel room all while he was at the school
- Until he retired from IBM/AirForce Reserves, she would come out in the mornings and wipe the dew off his windshield
- He was astonished that I "let" Sally have a mind of her own.  We have had some extremely weird conversations on the golf course over the years

But, they are quite happy with the 1950's lifestyle, and it works well for them.  I couldn't take it.

Sally is very strong willed, and I have no concerns that if anything should happen to me that she could handle things.  At 45, she started back to college (she had an AA, but completely changed career paths), is now a professor at FAU, and already co-authored a book.  Our lives are somewhat unconventional, especially by 1955 standards. I stay at home, and she goes out to work.  I do virtually all the cooking, dishes, and most of the laundry.  She comes home to me, and I get her a glass of wine.

 to you and the opposite to Charlie -- although, as you say, it works for both of them.

My mother was the first on our block to go to work in the 70s, and it was a neighborhood scandal. One of my friend's Moms even commented that my mother was lazy because she didn't serve us a hot breakfast every day. My Dad's attitude was that Mom was already spending so much time out of the house with PTA and other volunteer work, she might as well spend her days where she'd get paid for her efforts. Cynical, but progressive for the time, I'd say!

While I'm here, congrats, Evo! If you survive the wedding planning, marriage will seem like a piece of cake.

Good grief!  I didn't know people still acted like that today!  THAT'S INSANE!  Well, at least it works well for them.  I can relate to IPA's posting.  My mom worked parttime when I was little, then by the time I was in elementary school, she was basically a FT secretary at our church.  Me?  Obviously, I stay home w/ the kids.  Shoot!  There's no way I could make enough money to pay for daycare for 3 kids!  But when Juliana is in school FT, I plan on getting a PT job or really doing the writing bit more diligently.  Dan says basically what your dad did, that if I'm gonna spend all day doing the volunteer stuff, might as well get paid for it.  I might even try to do a PT gig at the preschool.  I love being over there!  My only requirements are to not work on Weds so I don't have to give up my Bible study and to be able to see my kids off to school and be home when the bus gets here.

You also freelance, right? Coupled with raising a family, running a household, and volunteering, that might just make you a wonder woman! :)

Just think of what you're doing now as networking. My sister-in-law was a stay-at-home Mom for 15(!) years before deciding to go for her realtor's license. Turns out she's insanely good at selling houses, and she has loads of community contacts because of all the volunteer work she did for her kids' schools.

Don't let any of that city planning stuff get in the way of going to NATS games.  You gotta think Priorities you know!   ;)

Seriously, That's Great!  Congrats, I hope you get the appointment.
