Emphatically not the headline I expected to see this morning.

I find it interesting to note that Pope John Paul II died the Saturday after Easter and Pope Francis died the day after Easter (meanwhile, Pope Benedict XVI died on December 31). There is a school of thought that some people can sometimes manage to hang onto life if there is something imminent for which they want to be alive. Makes me wonder whether they were consciously able to hang on to make it through Easter Sunday.

Broke into it's own separate thread.

He was respected across faiths.

I believe this is true. It could be the case that he knew he was in bad shape and pumped up a bit (extra oxygen, pain killers, whatever) to appear to the crowd on Easter and to meet with Vance and others on his schedule. I could see him working with doctors to get through Holy Week.

I think there's something to the idea of someone willing himself to live. My mother's parents both seemed to do that, hanging on until all the relatives had managed to see them one last time.

I remember his visit to DC overlapping with Yom Kippur. This led to a comment I first heard about JPII when he visited Boston Common on Yom Kippur - Gud YomTov, Pontiff (if you pronounce it more Yiddish than Hebrew, it rhymes).

Yes, same with Jimmy Carter, who hung on long enough to see Harris win the presidential election -- in 20-20 hindsight a poor decision.

Respectfully disagree that he earned his own RIP thread.  Word is that he was compulsively pontificating up until the moment of his last breath.  Many times I've wanted to hit him with a George Foreman grill.

I anticipated this would draw 10+ comments, thus its own thread. There will be some speculation about his successor, discussion of his funeral, as well as comments on the man. Would not be surprised if this ends up over a page. Truly an easy decision for the moderator.

I just watched "Conclave" on a plane and highly recommend it...behind the dogma and ritual, it's just nasty old politics.

Ever read Angels and Demons by Dan Brown?  The plot line heavily involves the Vatican.

I’m sure there is politics.  But you guys are talking about pure fiction.

My bride said it was a terrific piece as well...

BTW...I saw where the Catholic Church may consider electing a Pope who's actually a Catholic this time...  :hysterical:

FWIW, I think one of the candidates that the Post mentioned converted. No, not JD.

The Conclave was very well done.  Church needs to go back to being just for rich white people!

If I were to pick a religion it would be RC just for the theatre...dudes in full regalia swinging incense are way more interesting than unitarian pancake dinners  :P

That’s why I stay.

My oldest brother married an Armenian Catholic girl.  Talk about the regalia.  I was like totally fascinated at ten years old by the attire of the priest and his assistants.  It’s like way cooler than RC.

Didn't George Costanza say it was the hats as his reason for wanting to become Latvian Orthodox?
