Mark Canha. Making $11.5 million this year. Last contract was for 2 years, $26.5 million, and a 2024 option. Not the big hairy chest guy, but a decent hitter. Will be 36 next year, and slipped a bit so far, so there's no need to go long terms and should be signable.
Until he gets here and he sucks

Sign Soto for first base during the off-season. It would be quite the fun team.

First - Soto
Second - Garcia against righties. Find someone against lefties.
Short - Abrams.
Third - House
Left - Lile
Center - Crews
Right - Wood
Catcher - Millas
DH - Winker

Darren Baker utility infielder/outfielder, Vargas everywhere.

Rotation - Gore, Parker, Irvin, Gray, Cavalli

Bullpen - Harvey, Finnegan and whoever.

What happened to Jacob Young?

And Lane Thomas.  Why in the world would Lile even be on this list?

What happened to Jacob Young?

You're right. Put Young in center and Crews in left. Lile fourth outfielder.

Lance Thomas retired a few years, may have made a good OF with his size but I doubt he could have hit.

Talk Nats had a piece up speculating on signing Soto for first. Apparently, he may be taking groundballs there.

Soto is Soto and you break every rule you ordinarily self-impose when you consider signing him. That said, I am super-reluctant to lock in 1B/DH to one guy for huge money when there are tons of guys who you likely could sign to 2-3 years for under $20 million AAV who could help you. This is where you pick up guys coming off their 1st or second FA contract but who are still performing.

MLB Trade Rumors has a potential FA list here:
https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/04/2024-25-mlb-free-agents.html

Extracting the 1B list:
Quote
Pete Alonso (30)
Josh Bell (32)
Cody Bellinger (29) – can opt out of remaining two years, $50MM*
Ji-Man Choi (34)
Garrett Cooper (34)
C.J. Cron (35)
Paul Goldschmidt (37)
Rhys Hoskins (32) – $18MM player option with a $4MM buyout
Ryan O’Hearn (31) – $7.5MM club option (increases to $8MM with 120 games played)
Anthony Rizzo (35)* – $17MM club option with a $6MM buyout
Carlos Santana (39)
Rowdy Tellez (30)
Justin Turner (40)*
Joey Votto (41)
Christian Walker (34)

I'd look mostly at guy like a Justin Turner or Paul Goldschmdt at the 37+ age bracket. I'd also be interested in Josh Bell or Ryan O'Hearn.

If the Nats are willing to spend more, then I'd look at Christian Walker. I think the bidding on Alonso will be crazy, especially if the Yankees have 1B open and don't sign Soto for it.

Given that list I might send Winker to 1B school this winter.

I'd think about 2 years, $20 million for O'Hearn, with a 3rd year $10 million team option with a $2 million buyout.

Soto is not coming back.  Boras is going to want a massive overpay, and the Lerners not only won't do that, they would defer half the contract, which Soto might not want.

whether here or elsewhere, he should try to play some 1st base for his market.

Everyone on that list is washed. It feels like you're going to have to give a multi year deal just to have a guy OPS in the mid to high 700s.

Turner had a nice year last year.

That group is mostly guys who won't require a long term commitment, won't break the bank, and have a decent likelihood of .750 OPS. of those guys, I think O'Hearn might be the most interesting affordable name not requiring a longterm commitment.

As for Winker getting a 1st base glove, that's borderline Scott Hatteberg / Moneyball stuff.

Turner is 39.

All of those guys should get one year, but will be asking multiple.

O'Hearn is a nice platoon option, but he has a club option at 7.5 million. I cant see them declining that. So unless you want to trade something for it, I dont see how we get him.

Would they entertain the idea of moving Lane to 1st?

if Rizzo wants to work some trade magic, it sure would be nice to find a way to land this guy:

Yeah there's no way the O's are letting O'Hearn go when they only have to pay him $8 million.

Morales is the number 4 prospect and in AA projected to come on the scene next year. Maybe he'll come through.

Thumb injury sliding into home on May 21. I posted about it last month in the FTP thread. They generally don't disclose additional details on minor league injuries.

Ok, doesn't sound like something long term.

I think the Diamondbacks and Padres are shoo-ins to finish above five hundred. And probably one of the central teams. Maybe two. Add in the Braves. Just can’t see how the Nats get a wild card.

Hassel seems to be a bust so hang onto both of Pinckney and Lile.  One may make it.

Trade Finnegan.

SELL.  SELL. SELL.

The last time I heard that Randolph and Mortimer Duke were going broke.
