I admit I have yet to check out my theory, but I bet you find that the Nats had a winning record by thin margins in Hernandez, Patterson and Loiaza starts, and big deficit defeats in games by other starters, if you look at first half 2005.  You could win 2/3 of games, and be outscored in total under this scenario.

For what it's worth, the Nats played in 60 one-run games in 2005, winning 29. In the games that ended by 1 run, the starters and the Nats record in those games is as follows:

Hernandez: 10-9 (35 starts)
Loaiza: 4-8 (34 starts)
Patterson: 8-3 (31 starts)
Armas: 2-7 (19 starts)
Drese: 4-2 (11 starts)
Ohka: 1-0 (9 starts)
Day: 0-1 (5 starts)
Vargas: 0-1 (4 starts)

The other starters (Carrasco, Kim, Rauch, Halama, Bergmann, Rasner and White) accounted for the remaining 14 starts, with none ending by a one-run difference.

Remember, these are the team won/loss records for those games, not that of the starting pitchers.

Interesting, Patterson won 9 games, 8 of which were ultimately 1 run games.  I recall  he got very little run support that year, which I take to just be a random thing.

BTW, regarding your post on the big 3 on the '05 Astros, I looked at the stats and it appeared that between the three of them, they started around seven games in which the Astros scored zero runs. Clemens started at least three where the Astros lost 1-0.

The Nats won 8 of Patterson's starts that eventually ended in one-run games. I'd have to research more to find out how many of those one-run games were actually won by the Starter.

OK, I'm back... here are the numbers:

           Nat's    1-Run
         Record In  Games
           1-Run   #Won by
Starter    Games   Starter*
==========================
Hernandez  10-9       6
Loaiza      4-8       1
Patterson   8-3       2
Armas       2-7       2
Drese       4-2       3
Ohka        1-0       1
Day         0-1       0
Vargas      0-1       0

I remmber Baerga and blanco from 05. I never even heard of the other guy

Whatever became of Baerga?  I really liked him.  I think it's just because I liked saying his name!  Has a nice roll off the tongue to it!  :icon_mrgreen:

Svrluga did a "where are they now" blog one time and I believe he said that Baerga was doing color commentary for a Spanish-language network. I liked Baerga, too.

I don't how well the numbers would support this but I recall Loiaza going thru a stretch in 2005 where he too didn't get much run support.

BTW, I love when the girls chime in on topics and stray from the substance of the discussion  :) (don't take offense ladies I meant it in a nice way).  ;)

There should be a smiley where the little guy is falling off his chair backwards to express laughter and shock.

Nice and thick!  I was always shocked to see it.  I just didn't imagine him with so much and so thick.  :D

So, is this the kind of tangent you were looking for?

Wow!  Look at Maj's curls!  I told Andrew that girls love curls (he hates his chemo curls and isn't convinced).  But those are some truly fine heads of hair in that pic!  :icon_mrgreen:

Edit:  Castilla and Baerga aren't too hard on the eyes, either!  teeehee

Doesn't he look like he should play the role of Lex Luthor?

Now we've all strayed. Blame the girls  ;)

YES!  But he's too nice to be Lex Luthor!  :D

Cute Luthor story!  Andrew was about 5 (maybe 4 1/2).  He's been into action figures for 2-3 years now.  But he knew that Lex is a bad guy and wanted him to go w/ all his good guys.  So, he wrote a "order" to Toys R Us for Lex Lufor (sp. on purpose and put it in the mailbox.  It was so cute.  I took the "order" out of the mailbox and called my mother in law and had her go pick it up at the toy store near her house and mail it to Andrew.  He was estatic!  But as he got older, we told him that orders needed money.  He's now forgotten it, but it was so sweet!
