Worst Trade Ever?
« Topic Start: October 27, 2023, 05:32:04 PM »
So is the Cards trading Zac Gallen, Sandy Alcántara, Magneuris Sierra, and Daniel Castano to the Miami Marlins for Marcell Ozuna worse than the Glenn Davis Trade?

I don’t know if it’s the worst ever but it was bad.  Gallen was traded to AZ for Jazz Chisholm.

Phillies have traded two HOF guys to the Cubs for basically nothing in return.  Ferguson Jenkins and Ryne Sandberg. I would list those among the worst ever.

Glenn Davis for Steve Finley, Pete Harnisch and Curt Schilling.  Those three accounted for about 140 WAR for their later teams; Davis about 0.7 for Baltimore.

Heathcliff Slocumb for Jason Varitek and Derek Lowe. 1.0 fWAR from the trade to retirement after 2000 for Heathcliff. 22.0 for 'tek, 39.4 for Lowe.

Larry Andersen for Jeff Bagwell.

But LA has been the much better radio color guy.

I was playing the outfield in Mexico and caught a fly ball hit by Ryne Sandberg the year he was MVP. It was on a Cubs cruise when cruise members played the Cubs who were on the cruise.

Bob Short traded Jim Hannan, Joe Coleman, Aurelio Rodriguez, and Eddie Brinkman to the Tigers for Denny McLain. Destroyed the Expansion Senators and baseball in Washington, while the trade boosted Detroit to second place in the AL East in 1971 and to ALCS in 1972. McLain lost 22 games in 1971.

No crap. A decade after the real Nats are moved to Minneapolis, Short destroys any hope of competing in that era.

Aurelio Rodriguez was a really good 3B. Don’t recall how long Brinkman played after the trade?  He was the ultimate no hit good field SS of that era.

I started following the Mariners when Langston and Clemens used to battle for the lead in Ks in the AL. They did that deal and Johnson started to pile up Ks and BBs. About the same time Edgar and Griffey came up and they dealt for Buehner, so I became a fan.

Brinkman had learned to hit .260 with Ted Williams in 1969. He started for Detroit through 1974. Not a good hitter, but a great fielder with a powerful arm. George Case III, son of a Nats coach, says that he was told to take throws from Brinkman when the Nats tried him out. George says that Brinkman's throws burned and nearly broke his hand.

The White Sox traded Fernando Tatis Jr to the Padres for James Shields, a pitcher who put up a negative WAR in a single season for them. It looks like Tatis probably will not be the GOAT but at one point it looked like he might be.

I'd probably go with the Glenn Davis trade (shockingly, disgustingly bad) with the Heathcliff for Lowe/'tek trade coming in second, but two more recent ones come to mind as being really bad:

Erik Bedard for Adam Jones, Chris Tillman, and George Sherrill (as well as a couple other nobodies).  This one is especially vexing because Johan Santana was on the trade market during the same offseason and the Mets gave up less than the Mariners to get him.

and, in a reversal of most of these trades:

Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera for Dallas Trahern, Burke Badenhop, Frankie De La Cruz, Cameron Maybin, Andrew Miller and Mike Rabelo.  I actually had to copy/paste this because I didn't remember most of the names and probably never will.  This is one of those trades where the team that got the established superstar was actually the big winner, and the team that got the prospects was completely and utterly fleeced.

Of course, Miller would go on to have some success as a reliever and Maybin would have the odd productive year here or there, but it doesn't even come close to Miggy's production and impact in Detroit.

The funny thing is that Willis ended up amounting to nothing in Detroit, but if he had been roughly 80-90% of the pitcher he was in Miami, this would have been even more lopsided.

The Colon to the Expos trade was pretty bad: Colon (who played only that half-season in Montreal, which didn't make the playoffs, and gave them 2.4 WAR) and Tim Drew (-0.6) for Lee Stevens (0.2), Brandon Phillips (31.5), Grady Sizemore (27.2), and Cliff Lee (43.3).

That Colon trade might have had the second biggest WAR difference, unless Miggy topped 100 war by himself

Edit - 67.8 fWAR

Not sure how I forgot that one, but yeah, total disaster.

Also, just a year or so into his tenure with the Rangers, Jon Daniels sent Chris Young and Adrian Gonzalez to the Padres for Adam Eaton (the pitcher) and Akinori Otsuka.  Almost put an early end to what would end up being a pretty successful run in their front office.

How about the worst free agent signing when the player changes teams. So not a Stras situation.

Rendon probably isn't the worst but he's gotta be up there.

Well, Chris Davis was already an Oriole when he signed that mega deal that the Orioles will pay on until 2037.

Here's a walk down bad memory lane:

Mike Hampton, Josh Hamilton, and Anthony Rendon are all on the list as is our old pal Ian Desmond.
